got Black Flag Loose Nut from when I was a kid---will give it a spin tonight

just scored a 45 of TV Party at a garage sale for a buck

both very nice...I always find that Black Flag cover art is disturbing--Henry Rollins pure something and all should open there ears to him and his music...

    go shopping

The Avett Brothers. Saw them at Music Midtown last September and was impressed. Going to see them this November.

Not sure why I haven't gotten around to picking up any of their stuff...

  • I own zero Nirvana, used to have In Utero and Bleach on CD but those have long been lost. Thinking about picking up the In Utero delux release. Then there's tons of blues and jazz artists that I'd like to start digging into, but own nothing at the present.

  • Since I subscribed to Spotify I've gotten into some bands I'm yet to buy anything yet. The Decemberists and Band Of Horses to name two.

    Sunny day real estate.
    Molly hatchet
    Wings ( I don't understand that one)
    Pantera
  • Band of skulls
  • I found wings at goodwill about a month ago for $2 couldn't pass it up
  • Lindsey Stirling is one artist that I don't own any albums due to Deezer (since Spotify is not available in Canada) and I'm sure her sophomore will be available on Deezer as well. I've been more interested in streaming music in recent times just because I listen to way too many kinds of music.

Oh man, same here with Black Flag. I've got some Rollins band- and pretty much every one of Henry's great books- but no Black Flag. :( Must do something about that!

    Also, no:

    Rites of Spring
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (shame on me!)
Son House (one CD, no vinyl... yet!)

Just off the top of my head, in Punk music that I used to own, and then got "Borrowed" and never returned there is:

    Black Flag
    Dag Nasty
    Agent Orange
    J.F.A.
    M.D.C.
    Dr. Know
    Butthole Surfers
    Suicidal Tendencies
    P.I.L.

Maybe I should stop buying some of this other crap, until I get some of the good stuff back?

Which Blag Flag do you have? That band went through so many incarnations I'm never quiet sure where to start. Suggestion?

Tell us about meeting Henry! I'd love to hear any stories you have! I've never met HR but did share a few emails with him regarding the writer Max Frisch. He seems to make a lot of time for fans.

    Hey Brian,

I don't have any Black Flag/Rollins, that's what I'm saying! For shame. Well, maybe a few singles on itunes, but yeah, the different incarnations of BF has thrown me off too, I think that's probably why I haven't seeked out too much.

I saw Henry at one of his spoken word shows probably 10 years ago (highly recommended!) after reading one of his books, and after the show my friend and I went to eat at Roxy's in Portland, and on our way back to the car, we noticed a group of people standing outside the venue, and sure enough, there was Henry, so we went over to check it out. He was standing in the middle of a crowd of people talking and taking questions, and was completely awesome. He talked about early Black Flag shows, other artists he admired, concert artwork, etc. etc. He took pictures with fans (Charlie's Angel's gun pose!) and signed my ticket stub. I didn't get a pic because this was back in the crappy flip phone camera days and I knew mine wasn't up to the challenge, but when I said, "Nice to meet you" and shook his hand, he kind of bowed down. Very cool guy. He probably was out there for an hour talking with everyone (and I have no idea how long he had already been there by the time I arrived). It was interesting to see him in person; He's a big guy of course, but short, and I was behind him, so I had perfect view of his black flag tattoo on his neck:) It's interesting that you've emailed him, because that night, I saw him give his email address to a fan to answer a list of questions he had. Finally, he said he had to go, because he was freezing cold, and everyone laughed. It was not that cold, lol. Ahh, the Pacific Northwest!

Anyway, he definitely went above and beyond with fans. He's a great guy.

Hey Brian! I hope you don't mind if I jump in here...a great place to start with Black Flag is Damaged. It's the first release with Henry on vocals. I can make you a copy, if you are interested. I also have plenty of Henry's spoken word stuff on CD, and can make copies of that as well. Next to Pearl Jam, he is one performer I will go see again and again and again. And as curlygirly9 mentioned, he goes above and beyond with his fans (I've met him several times, and he is always cool).

Fantastic, curlygirly! I hope I get a chance to meet the man someday. He's got so much to tell and teach us. For me the biggest lesson is to keep going no matter what- "hack or pack" as he says in a few of his books.

I completely understand the preference for vinyl. The offer stands, if you decide to change your mind.

As for the spoken word stuff, on CD: everything from Think Tank (1998), through Spoken Word Guy vol. 1 & 2 (released in 2010), including Talk Is Cheap vols. 1-4. He mixes in his life and observations, along with politics. I also would include the Eric the Pilot CD, which is a very funny story.

On DVD: Up For It, Uncut From NYC, and his most recent, 50 (this was filmed in D.C. on his 50th birthday, where he did two sold out shows that night--I managed to make it to the second show, which was worth the 6 hr. drive).
