  • It is sad to see the band churn out these bland songs on two consecutive records. I don't know what happened to these guys. Change is inevitable in a band, but that doesn't mean they should get a pass for songs like sirens and just breathe. These songs lack any of the depth or edge of their earlier ballads.

Worst of all is that we now have two records filled with really energy killing songs which are now peppered into their live set-lists. This affects the vibe and energy of the whole live show. It was brutal last tour to sit through those string ensembles playing just breathe and the end for 20 minutes in the middle of a rock and roll concert. Fans are sitting down at pearl jam shows for gods sakes.

I love this band, and their music has been a huge part of my life . Which is why it is so frustrating and sad to see the band devolve so much in terms of their new material. I never thought I would not be excited for a new PJ album to come out , but after hearing sirens that is exactly the case.
See you guys at barclays, its gonna be an 87% awesome show.
Nothing but thanks for those willing to give of their soul to a stranger. And I hate to say it but The Who are overated.

I also happen to think Sirens is a lot deeper than Better Man, Nothing Man, or most of their really popular ballads listed there.

It reminds me of Black in how emotionally raw and naked it is. Better Man and everything feel impersonal, but Sirens feels like a door into Eddie's now-mature mind. So I love it.

    i agree

I think that Better Man is actually quite personal, but I think that Sirens shows the vulnerbality that Ed is showing now. When I listen to the song, I keep thinking about my ow child. Trust me, children will scare the crap out of you.

What I would hope though, for all of you that hear it for the first time, that Ed will end the song with "the fear will go away"; just an acappella voice ringing through the arena. That would make the vulnerability even more visible.

And bone chilling... I like the way he does it sometimes with Black. This high pitched tender voice just singing; it takes you to another place.

I have nothing against ballads, it has been a part of pj since the beginning. However, if you have been to a show post backspacer you would know that the effect just breath and speed of sound had on their live shows was truly negative, in a way not seen before. The songs you mention add to the vibe of a pj show, their new ones suck the air out of the room. I have trouble understanding how someone can compare all those yesterdays to just breath.

I truly disagree on this one. I saw the emotions of the crowd during Come Back or Jusst Breathe. I was standing in Nijmegen and this whole crowd had an emotional outpour on Just Breathe. Just because its an acoustic song, does not mean it is a setlist killer. Sometimes I have trouble with Push Me Pull Me, on the other hand, I like the wackiness of it.

But Just Breathe/ The end are by any standards good songs, but should maybe get less rotated.

just breathe is a song, played the same and at the same place at setlist, thats why kills the vibe
and exactly i have trouble to understand how someone compare "the end and just breathe," songs eddie almost play alone with a guitar, with Sirens that all the band plays it and no one saw ever live..

    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."

You really believe its the placement in the setlist? Cmon man, i know youre a loyal fan but denial is another thing. Speed of sound is played with the band and it stills kills the energy with a double barrel shotgun. I never mentioned the end, but Blaming it on solo eddie seams like a reach to me, its ok to dislike some of their work but still like them, you dont have to worry.

what kind of argument is that?,im not worry at all,all fans are loyal,im no different,
im saying my opinion, just breathe is so boring with the same mood at the same place at setlist, eddie get at encore break alone at all shows, saw it 20 times in the row ..
you never saw sirens at all and you say its a set kiuller?
how come..?and look around, sirens isnt just a song people like..LOVE is the word all use..
the song is the next anthem at pj show along with alive and black...if u go to a show at the next week, you will see it..

I really hear no similarity between BS and LB. LB is on a whole other level so far.

I wasn't sure if the radio station I listen to at work would play Sirens, given they're a 'Rock' station, but looks like I'm going to be getting it once a day(they have no repeat work/week days) as well as MYM. Have yesterday & today so far anyway. :)

They've been playing it on my local rock station too, but the reception hasn't been that great. Most listeners seem to think it's boring. Music equivalent of a chick flick. A good chick flick, but still....

But Dimitris, (I know we disagree on this song), but this has more to do *when* the song is played than the song itself, right? The song in itself is a good acoustic song that can create a moment of introspection during a concert...

Not all songs need to be anthems.

And 20 shows???? Fuck, maybe there lies the problem ;)
