Last night I saw the Waterboys in concert in Toronto. Awesome show!

I wasn't really aware of them until last year, but have since been immersed in their first four LPs, particularly This Is The Sea and Fisherman's Blues. Highly recommended rock-pop, great lyrics, with an amazing fiddler in tow lending their sound a distinct Celtic flair.

Anyways, their Wikipedia page lists none other than Eddie Vedder as a fan. I can see the influence for sure: Waterboys, like PJ, deal in big, anthemic and earnest song writing. Leading me to ask:

Are any of you fellow Ten Clubbers fans of the Waterboys? Has PJ ever covered the Waterboys, or acknowledged them in interviews, liner notes, etc? There's no citation for the Wikipedia claim that Vedder is a fan, so I'm calling out to you lot for any light you can shed on the PJ-Waterboys nexus. Cheers!

  • Hey there you Greek fanatic (in the best possible sense!).

Know anything about the Scottish-Seattle connection I asked about?

Yes, here's another fan of The Waterboys. :D I'll see them next month in NYC, only a few days after PJ's concerts in Philly. And there are other fans too on this board, probably hiding in some other threads.
As for your question regarding the PJ-Waterboys connection, I found the following after doing a quick Google search. It's from a review of PJ's official bootleg from Glasgow 2000:

After a loose version of "Once," Vedder acknowledges a debt to Mike Scott of the Waterboys (and does a humorous impression of the Edinburgh-born singer) before running through his precious ukulele-only "Soon Forget."

I don't know what EV said exactly, but more info can be found on a recording of that show. :)
