LP Vinyl Record Thread

Not over crowd the place with record threads, but I thought it might be interesting to have a thread about vinyl LP records in general. (If this duplicates another thread we get let this one drop off.) Talk about things like vinyl care, shelving and storage, buying tips, or just good vinyl stories.

This article is what made me think this:

Not sure about the gloves (anybody?) and I don't clean mine as frequently, but the suggestions sound good. I'm not fanatical about these things, but I try to at least take decent care of my LPs.

  • It's funny that the 2nd paragraph is used to explain exactly what an LP is...we really are gettin' old :fp:

I definitely lack in the cleaning department. Same with the reel to reel I probably shouldn't leave it exposed all the time.

  • Appreciate the post. I had just recently started my collection of LPs. Bought an old Sony TT and now have a library of 4 records (not including 10C singles) with 2 more on the way. And was just thinking how best to keep them clean.

Its going to take awhile to build. Too bad I didn't keep my collection from my childhood. Would of had some KISS, Peter Frampton, Prism, Cheap Trick, The Guess Who.... Oh well.

I've heard/read a number of times that records should be cleaned before every playing. My own take is that because before the first playing I use a Spin Clean record washer on every record that I purchase (even new discs), keep the records in archival inner sleeves, use Record Research Lab stylus cleaner and play the records with the dust cover on the player, the initial cleaning should last several plays and shouldn't need further cleaning.

I have to admit it was fun and easy when I was a kid and just slapped the record on the turn table, but most of those records got pretty much trashed and I wish I had taken better care of them.

That is true, my old collection was probably in terrible condition by the time I was done with it. Thanks for the tips. I'll look for a Spin Clean record washer for sure.

Because records were statically charged, they would attract dust and other particulates in the air including soot from candles, smoke, and airborne kitchen grease.

I usually let the grease settle to the counter/ground before parading my vinyl collection through the kitchen.

My mom uses gloves (on her quite large record collection of incredibly shitty music  ), but I find that a pain in the ass. I want to flip records as quickly as possible to the keep the flow of the album going. But if you are really OCD about your vinyl (like my mom, apparently), then I can see how it would be a good idea. Lots of oils on those fingers!

I am very seriously considering getting an affordable record cleaning apparatus.... any suggestions on that? I mean really affordable, like under $200. There is the Spin-Clean: http://www.spincleanrecordwasher.com/
Does it really work without ruining your records? Because it's nice and cheap and simple.
EDIT: Should have read some more posts first.... So the Spin-Clean is really a good way to go Brian? I would not clean them before every play, especially since you can wash 50 records with one application of the cleaner. I'd probably clean them every few months of something. I think that is perfectly reasonable... I kind of think those who say you should clean it before every play are crazy, quite frankly. I would think that doing that would actually wear out the records faster, with all that cleaning. I can't see how that could not be the case.

I'm a huge fan of the Spin Clean. It's affordable and basically does the same job as the expensive plug in models. The only catch is to not waste the cleaning fluid on just a few records. It's better to do a bigger batch at one time. I bought extra drying clothes (they get damp fairly fast) then empty the dishwasher and use the bottom rack (which has protective rubber on the rack slots) to line up the records with a slow fan blowing on them edge-wise for thorough drying. I can professionally clean up to about 40 records at a time this way. I had an old Steve Miller "Brave New World" that sounded a little rough that I ran through with a batch to be cleaned and the difference was remarkable. It sounds great now! I know... this sounds like an advertisement.
But I really do like my Spin Clean!

Wow, you should apply for a job with their company.;) Okay, very good to know, thank you. I will probably buy something very soon - just need to do a little more research, but this sounds like a likely option. Can't go wrong with the price, that's for sure.

The Spin Clean works amazing for $75 dollars. I might clean some records right now because of this thread.
