(CNN) -- Big questions loom over the debate on whether the United States should strike Syria: Who are the Syrian rebels? Should the United States and other countries help them?

The first thing to know is that the rebels aren't all playing on the same team. They're arrayed against the Syrian government in a constellation of groups and factions, each with its own agenda. Some are in league with al Qaeda.

Secondly, the opposition has morphed in the last few years. It started with ordinary Syrians angry at police for arresting children who painted anti-government graffiti. Now it attracts fighters from outside Syria.

What else should you know about the rebels in Syria? A lot.

Here are 20 points to get you up to speed, based on CNN's reporting since the Syrian crisis began in 2011.

Don't forget they are torturing murdering genocidal maniacs as well. Just wait and see, when we do the dirty work for our own enemies they will murder Christians and Jews, burn every church in sight, and it will all be our fault. OHHH WAIT we already did this in Egypt! Has our president said anything about he violence against Christians in Egypt? Main stream media?

we need to get the hell out of a place we have no clue how to deal with. Russia is correct a monkey with a hand grenade for sure. That would make a dam good Ames bros poster, but hey they supported BO so they would never admit he was a fucking fraud. Bush evil for Iraq lies, Obama a great humanitarian for the same damn thing
  • So far Obama and McCain have said there are no plans to aid the rebels.

Despite who did the chemical weapon attack, we (and others if they have the balls) need to help those innocent people. I know, I know, there are people all over the world who kill innocent people every day (and we should help them if possible), but how can people sit back and just watch that unfold there?

US and others need to help others, not just us. If the powerful countries refuse to help those who can't help themselves, then let them try and live with that feeling for the rest of their lives.

You can spend your time alone, redigesting past regrets, oh
or you can come to terms and realize
you're the only one who can't forgive yourself, oh
makes much more sense to live in the present tense

Burned every church in sight? Might you be overstating something. And unless you have lost the functions in your ears, Obama is taking a lot of shit for this. I'm in Ireland and I'm hearing it.

So with respect, enough of the partisan stuff, really really weak way to make your point

American Media mentions it rarely, if at all, mostly talk radio. TV outlets from what I have seen did nothing to report it through the screen or on their websites. Maybe I missed it, but it has been reported more in the UK than in our own country. I think the source I saw it on was from England. I am not being partisan, I am being a concerned American who thinks both parties we have here are in the tank for the military industrial complex. That is the problem, you get more truth about American over an ocean than we get in our own back yard because the media in the US has rarely criticized of questioned anything Obama has done. Fox news once did, but once they became partially owned by Saudi Arabian interests criticism of the fanatical and fascist sects of the middle east and Obama decreased significantly. There are many of us who are not partisan, we are just FED UP with War, corruption, murder in the name of...

yes every church in sight might be an overstatement now, but the Nazis started slowly as well. The new age nazis known as Islamic Fascist would love to kill every Jew and Christian they could, and it starts with a few and becomes all they can find. They mark buildings to attack with black spray paint.... It is already starting in Syria

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013 ... ttack.html

you may think it is an overstatement now, but when we(USA) create another power vacuum to be filled with murderers of another kind, just as bad as Assad, Mubarack, Hussain, etc. you'll see how close to the truth it will become

sounds like everybody but syria wants to avoid a conflict

    Godfather.

Just hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made an off-hand comment about how Syria could avert a military strike by turning over its chemical weapons program, Russia's foreign minister is proposing that the Assad regime do just that.

Sergey Lavrov said Monday that Russia will push Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control. He said that if such a move would help avert a possible U.S. strike on Syria, Russia will start work "immediately" to persuade Syria to relinquish control over its chemical arsenals.

The plan could challenge Kerry over comments he made during an earlier press conference in London. Kerry said early Monday morning that if Bashar Assad wanted to defuse the crisis, "he could turn every single bit of his chemical weapons over to the international community" within a week.

But Kerry claimed that Assad "isn't about to do it" -- and an aide suggested the secretary was not being serious.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki clarified that Kerry "was making a rhetorical argument about the impossibility and unlikelihood of Asad turning over chemical weapons he has denied he used."

She added: "His point was that this brutal dictator with a history of playing fast and loose with the facts cannot be trusted to turn over chemical weapons otherwise he would have done so long ago."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Have the rebels tried to fire a proton torpedo into a small thermal exhaust port approximately 2 meters wide yet?
