What are locked Forum topics?

And why? I was just in one titled "stupid canadians" and now it is locked. Is it because of the title? I wasn't a big fan of the title (I didn't write it, and being from Canada), but the discussion inside the forum I thought was pretty constructive. Just wondering.....

I think it was the title, too, but who knows for sure?

This will most likely get locked pretty quick too. The only criteria for locking a thread is that one of the mods decides it should be locked. Sometimes we get an explanation, sometimes we don't.

I was curious why the "Why do I post here?" thread got locked yesterday.

the posting guidelines will tell you what you need to know ... spending some time on here will also give you an idea ...

the thread you mentioned was definitely locked for the title ... and yours will probably locked as well ...

In before the lock ... buy why do you feel this will/should be locked. I will admit I worded the title poorly, but it how I felt at the time. I see nothing wrong with this thread.

Threads about locked threads seem to universally get locked.
I suppose it is because the mods don't want board members discussing the moderators decisions. Perhaps it is seen as a step towards subversion of authority. I really don't know. But my first thought when I saw this thread was also "IBTL". I think Polaris' comment about spending time on here is probably your best bet. The rules can be helpful for a baseline, but this board is operated under a modicum of discretion (ie. not entirely rules based) ... IMHO, of course.

I too don't see why this thread would be locked - yet, anyway. Even if threads questioning locked threads typically get locked - as long as this one is informative and polite - I hope it would stay open.

    Time will tell.

I agree, the title of the topic was a little shocking, but the content was decent and constructive I thought. Too bad because my last comment didn't make it, and I thought it was pretty eloquent. I don't think it was anything I said, or what anyone else said....must have been the title. Oh well, I guess "Mind your Manners"!? Haha

Ya, discussing moderator actions (bannings, locked threads) publicly is a no-no (tho they have stated that they're ok with questions being asked via PM). Actually, discussing ANY 10C member is a no-no, so its not some heinous authoritarian measure as some like to think...
But not only that, this thread is not on topic for this subforum. Might fit in the tech/help section, but its def not about politics or current events (before some smartass says it - its not current events unless you consider a locked thread news).
As for the stupid canadians thread...it was probably reported by someone offended by the title, or by someone offended by the 'typical ignorant americans' comment. They probably could have requested the thread title be changed but whatever...in the grand scheme of things, the number of fucks given for this kind of thing should be pretty low.

Yes, we're very BIG on people being nice to each other and no name-calling ever; that's huge. There are right ways to discuss things and make points.

Now this thread question could have been answered by just writing to a mod...we just felt it was obvious on the thread abusing Canadians...ALL Canadians.

    Have a nice one. :)
