Name distortion. Yeah or Nay?

Many of us have done it- I've done it (I once referred to Ted Nugent as "Ted No-gent)- distorted a name to express how we feel about someone. Other examples of what I mean: Bush/Shrub. Obama/Nobama. Chomsky/Chumsky etc.

Is this clever or childish? I used to think it was clever but for me, the habit has gotten old and tired and often does, indeed, sound childish. I'm for a voluntary ban on name distortion. If I don't like someones approach I'll stick to the issues and how I feel about someone's influence on them and avoid the temptation of name distortion (which is basically name-calling, right?).

Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

It is just a simple means of expression.

Terms such as asshole...this can be recovered from.

Once a name as morphed- chumsky- not so much.
live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.

I guess it's just that I'd rather be called an asshole (hemorrhoids are worse) rather than (if the person really meant it ;) ) briansux.

No biggie- just wanted to get others take.

Even if I end up disagreeing, I tend to give more credence to points / arguments made without that nonsense.

Seems kinda stupid and petty to me.

(perhaps a bit different, but sort of like the combining of couple's names - a la Brangelina)
