  • No particular order:

    1. Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of by U2 at the Rogers Centre on September 17, 2009: it was only Bono singing & The Edge on an acoustic guitar and sounded surprisingly good, since it was at a baseball/football stadium.
    2. Your Song by Elton John at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 30, 2013: just the power of his voice during that song was amazing. I never witnessed him singing with such power and emotions before.
    3. Monkey Wrench by Foo Fighters on August 9, 2011: song extended, bridge performed twice, first time by crowd only and 2nd time by Dave Grohl and Dave Grohl mentioned that Alex Lifeson of Rush was at the show
    4. Rockin' The Free World (Neil Young song) by Pearl Jam on September 11, 2011, which Neil Young joined Pearl Jam on stage. I mean, what are the odds?!
    5. Dave Matthews Band at the Air Canada Centre on December 7, 2012: don't remember the name of the song, but Carter Beauford played a really good drum solo in the middle of a song which included intense strobe lights and lasers.
    6. Turn the Page (Bob Seger song) by Metallica at the Orion Music and More Festival in Detroit on June 9, 2013: just because I witnessed this song being played in Detroit.
    7. N****s In Paris by Jay-Z & Kanye West at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris, France on June 1, 2012: they played that same song 11 times in a row, a record at the time. It was broken during their 3rd show in Paris on June 18, in which they played that song TWELVE TIMES. During the later performances, Jay-Z & Kanye actually asked the crowd on the floor do to various mosh pits during the song and at one time, the producer of this song, Hit-Boy, joined them on stage and went crowd surfing.
    8. Comfortably Numb by Roger Waters (both The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon Tour)
    9. Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day at Copps Coliseum on July 16, 2009: the band invited a fan onstage and played guitar during the song.
    10. Rammstein at the Air Canada Centre on May 8, 2011: the entire set, but the one moment that shocked me the most was during Benzin where Till Lindemann brought a gas pump and ripped a flamethrower. At the end of the song, a random guy was on stage and Till Lindemann burned him with the gas tank. I was shocked because I never anticipated it.

Honorable mention: In This Twilight by Nine Inch Nails on August 5, 2008: interesting choice of closer to their Lights In The Sky tour with a ending both intense and moving and Rimes of the Ancient Mariner on March 16, 2008: a song that I will likely never witness again.

These are more top moments, rather than top songs, as there was some special significance to each. In no particular order, other than how they've come to memory:

-Pearl Jam - "Come Back" and "All Night" at Wrigley Field (Come Back for the dedication and how emotional it was, and All Night for enduring the delay and that being the first PJ song that they ripped into after "All The Way" with Ernie Banks. Also the sentiment of them going late into the night)
-Rage Against the Machine - "Wake Up" at Coachella 2007 (Zack's speech in the middle and the performance was intense)
-Foo Fighters - "Monkeywrench" at the Forum 2011 (Dave Grohl told a long story of meeting Prince and how he would bring down all the lights in the arena so the Foos did the same thing during the breakdown, then exploded into the last part of the song.)
-Dave Matthews Band - "Bartender" at Staples Center 2008 (Day of LeRoi Moore's passing, which Dave announced to the crowd after they opened with this song.)
-Temple of the Dog - "Say Hello 2 Heaven" at PJ20 (Really the whole TOTD set both nights was incredible.)
-Soundgarden - "New Damage" at the Wiltern 2013 (I won tix + access to soundcheck before the show and got to see them working out the song beforehand. It was the first time they'd played it since 1994. Gave me a whole new appreciation for Matt, who was directing the band as to how the song went)
-Paul McCartney - "My Love," "Something," and "A Day In The Life>Give Peace A Chance" at Coachella 2009 (Dedicated to Linda, George, and John respectively. His whole set was amazing and emotionally charged.)
-Perry Farrel, Dave Navarro, Flea, and Travis Barker playing Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" at Tom Morello's Justice Tour at the Troubadour 2008 (Farrel was on stage playing solo stuff, and Navarro was the last to come out before they launched into the song. Jane's was reuniting for NME's "Godlike Genius Award" but I was totally taken by surprise to see Perry and Dave together again.)
-Queens of the Stone Age - "In The Fade" with Mark Lanegan at Club Nokia in 2010 (I hadn't seen Lanegan perform with QOTSA since 2003 so when he came out for the encore and sang 4 songs, it was a great surprise.)

Oh what an awesome question!! In no particular order:

-Pearl Jam, "Wasted Reprise">"Better Man">"Black," Madison Square Garden, 5/21/10: Ed's speech into the gorgeous Wasted Reprise into the most incredible version of Better Man and Black. I just remember having gone crazy those past 2 days, but during Black just simply closing my eyes, singing along ever-so-quietly to myself, and just being in awe of my first PJ experience. It meant so much to me. The cheer we gave Ed during Better Man and the 'do do do do do do do' during Black will stay with me forever!

-Dave Matthews Band w/ Vusi Mahlasela, "Everyday," Madison Square Garden, 11/13/10: I have never experienced such pure joy as I have in that moment. One of those concert moments nobody will come close to understanding unless they were there. The way DMB fed off Vusi and vice versa and how they in turn fed off the crowd was in perfect alignment. I've never been a part of a moment so happy...truly incredible to witness.

-Eddie Vedder & Glen Hansard, "Falling Slowly," Beacon Theatre, 6/22/11: When I say it was breathtaking, it was literally breathtaking. My heart swelled and it was hard for me to breathe I was so in awe of how beautiful this was.

-Paul McCartney, "Hey Jude," Yankee Stadium, 7/16/11: Nothing much needs to be said here...hearing that legendary song live with 50,000 people singing along was unforgettable! One of those 'is this really happening?!' moments!

-Foo Fighters, "These Days," Global Citizen Festival, 9/29/12: Huge Foos fan. Always thought "These Days" was the dopiest song on Wasting Light. But took on a whole new meaning when I heard it at this festival. It was just 2 and a half weeks after my father died. Listening to the words of that song hit home so much...almost had a breakdown. I was so thankful they played it that night.

-The Avett Brothers, "A Father's First Spring," Pier Six Pavilion, 9/23/12: Another song so memorable because of one of my favorite bands singing a song that hit so close to home after the death of my father a week and a half before. It's a song about a father loving his daughter, and remains the only time I have cried at a concert. Couldn't keep the waterworks back for that one.

-Neil Young, "After the Gold Rush," Hippodrome Theatre, 4/28/11: Just Neil and a pump organ and goddammit you could hear a pin drop. Gorgeous is an understatement!

-The Black Crowes, "Hard to Handle/Hush," 9:30 Club, 4/8/13: One of the most fun I've ever had at a concert. Non-stop dancing and this mash-up to end the show left me with the stupidest smile on my face that I couldn't wipe off for days!

-The Who, "Love Reign O'er Me," Izod Center, 10/29/08: The one and only concert I ever attended with my dad. The Who was a very special band to my dad, and he raised me on them. So for him to take me to see them for my 16th birthday was amazing. It was also the show that made me want to go to concerts religiously for the rest of my life! I distinctly remember being amazed by this LROM performance in particular. After the show, he told me, "Sam, that's the happiest I've ever seen you!"

-Local Natives, "Sun Hands," 9:30 Club, 4/6/13: After wanting to have seen them for a couple of years, they did NOT disappoint! Everyone going batshit for this song was really memorable. I had so much fun jumping around!
"Sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith."

The ones I can remember...

Jimi Hendrix, 1968 Winterland: well, honestly everything but listening to Jimi sound check before the show was mind blowing. It was like listening to the Gods make love.

Crosby Stills Nash and Young (electric) Winterland, 1970: "Cowgirl in the Sand". A very emotional time for the band and big group hug with guitars at the end of the song.

Sandy Bull, 1970, "No Deposit, No Return Blues". Stunning.

Violent Femmes/ Gordon Gano: A Christian hymn- I don't remember which one but right in the middle of their fiery punk set, Gano played this beautiful hymn solo and it incensed the idiot crowd. Well done, Gordon Gano!

The Who, 1966 or 7- the show was like one endless mind blowing song.

Sun Ra and His Solar Arkestra: Introduction, Planetarium, Golden Gate Park. The band walked into the venue (and yes, the planetarium night sky was lit up) stwirling hollow plastic tubes over their heads making an unearthly, marvelous sound and sat down one at a time, taking up there horns and transitioning into a free jazz motif. Spellbinding to say the least!

It's a Beautiful Day: "White Bird", in Golden Gate Park, 1969 or so. The rendition I saw was simply gorgeous. I looked up David LaFlamme's number in the phone book the next day and told him how much I enjoyed it and he didn't mind the call in the least.

King Crimson (the later incarnation with Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, Sound Check- yes, once again a sound check. Fripp was cutting loose for several minutes before the show and from where I was standing, the sound was intense and inspired. The show was great but the sound check was totally uninhibited.

Paul Westerberg and His Only Friends, Great American Music Hall, 2004 "Left of the Dial" They had to play that in San Francisco... and they did!

Pearl Jam, Missoula, 2012: "Ghost" Ok maybe not the best song of the night... but THEY DID GHOST!
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

    WOW! Just WOW!

Waters is awesome in his own right, but being a guitar player I do lean more towards Gilmour. Dude still totally has it, vocally and guitar wise and his band was incredible.

If I'd everhad the pleasure to see him, I'm sure Dogs or something from The Wall would make the cut.

I've not seen as much live (rock) music as I would like, so this will not all be rock -- sorry.

In no particular order, just as they come to mind:

Eddie Vedder debuting "Unthought Known" in Newark
The Style Council -- Berlin, 1985. I'd have to say "the whole show," but "My Ever-Changing Moods" is a good choice.
Peter Gabriel -- "Solsbury Hill," WOMAD, San Francisco, 1993. He couldn't have been more than fifteen feet away from me. :D
Paul Weller (yeah, he's kind of on here twice) -- "Bull-Rush," also San Francisco 1993.
The Church covering "Dancing Barefoot" at the Orpheum, Boston, 1990. I had fourth-row seats. These guys are guitar gods.
David Zinman conducting the New York Philharmonic's performance of Beethoven's 7th Symphony, my favorite piece of music. :D
Alisa Weilerstein playing Bright Sheng's "Northern Lights," a piece that opened my mind to modern "classical" music.

Saving the best for last -- Augustin Hadelich, Sibelius Violin Concerto, last year. Jaw-droppingly good.
All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.
