I'm sure this has been seen before, but for any new ears it hits, you're welcome.

Before Pearl Jam was playing to sold-out stadium crowds, Eddie Vedder and co. were known as Mookie Blaylock, and probably just thrilled to be in the studio. In mid-October of 1990, the band – then Vedder, Stone Goassard (guitar), Mike McCready (other guitar), Jeff Ament (bass), and Dave Krusen (drums) – entered Seattle’s Galleria Potatohead (London Bridge Studios). There, for one of the first times ever, they laid their songs down on tape, and the rest is history.

Now, thanks to YouTube user Luciano Gargiulo, those early recordings are available for all to enjoy. The 11-track First Studio Sessions “album” features the first takes of many cuts that would eventually find a home on PJ’s debut record, Ten. You can also hear rarities like “Breath”, “Just a Girl”, “Evil Little Goat”, and what would eventually become “Yellow Ledbetter”.

The whole tape is really amazing to hear these first few cuts. Just to put on my headphones and hear each piece of the group coming together for the first time and hear each unique contribution to what turns out to be slight variations of the songs we know today. I'm a huge black fan and to hear a young/lighter/sound of Eddie's voice with more innocence and less growl and anger is truly special.

  • I would love it if they'd go back to playing these original songs at their original tempo. Give me back that chunky & groovy sound that I fell in love with 20+ years ago.

It's no longer up on those sites either. I don't understand why 10c/Pearl Jam would want to put a copyright claim And prevent their fans from hearing this. The songs are over 23 years old. They should be heard.

Love this recording. I hadn't listened to this for a while, but this thread made me go back and give it a listen. It is fun to hear the band in the very early stages. The amazing thing to me is how great they sounded right out of the gate.
