Can anyone comment on hearing it live? I love the studio version and have always wondered how it was in Dublin or Croatia. If anyone wants to trade it for any other live songs, please send me a PM!

Thanks,
Kyle

It was surreal to say the least. Dublin was my first PJ show, and there's no way I EVER expected to hear Education. I really enjoyed it, though it did sound a bit strange, being as it's the first time they played it live.

It's always been a favourite of mine from Lost Dogs, and I think with a bit more practice it could become a good live song.

  • From Dublin, my abiding memory is that no one really knew the lyrics (that doesn't exclude Eddie for a lot of it...:p)

But, yeah, kick ass moment, given that it was an ultra-rarity.

it's so rare to have them play a song for the first time, it was a surprise to hear it in Dublin!

To my shame, I didn't actually know the song when they played it at Dublin.

    But it sounded okay :)

....I think most of the crowd took it as an opportunity to go take a leak though :(

Although not one of my favourites it was one of the songs I'd find myself humming/singing along to when I listened to Lost Dogs so when Ed said they were going to play it ... and for the first time ... was definitely a highlight of my night in Dublin :)

Great song...Love it, but both versions are pretty ropey.

Ha ha, yeah you're right. If I remember correctly, in Zagreb, I noticed how Ed stared at the floor while singing, where his book with the lyrics was. I was really surprised that they played Education, but didn't know at the time it was never played before, except in Dublin.
    Sounds great, of course! :D

I loved it when they kicked it out, i really wasn't expecting it! It's one of my favourites from loas dogs too, and its certainly a good upbeat tempo and i really got into it. Felt i was the only one who knew the lyrics though! hehehe

And it was nice to know your a part of pearl jam history in a small way, first time live an all that.

Yeah it sounded good and as others have said it was a treat to hear something played for the first time at the gig you're at. I think I heard somewhere though that Ed wasn't that impressed with the reaction it got. Think he might have expected a bit more feed back from the crowd.
Hearing it on the boot it sounds better than that night, although we were surrounded by a group who literally stood there all night and didn't get into it at all. And that was in the pit! So maybe that affected my experience of a lesser known song. I knew it from Lost Dogs but it wasn't a favourite of mine, although I do prefer it now.

A couple of days before the gig I had coincidentally got into the song, listening to a fair amount more than usual. While queuing to get into the venue we could vaguely hear band's sound check. A song came on that sounded like education and I said this to a friend who dismissed it. During the show, low and behold, I was right! It was education they were playing. I gave it socks during this song, partly fuelled by the joy that they had rewarded us with such a rarity and partly because I'd listened to this song so much on the days prior to the show. I was a little disappointed by the general reaction of the crowd though, many in the pit seen this as a chance to take a breather? I thought it was good shit regardless:D

On a site note, being able to vaguely hear the soundcheck sort of ruined the surprise, and also the surprise of The Boys Are Back In Town

True enough. I only heard The Boys Are Back in Town Myself but to be honest it kind of added to the anticipation of the show. Then when the lads actually started to play it was just like 'OH, YEAH!'.
Did anyone else notice the Phil Lynott shirt Mike was wearing during the second encore? A lot of people I spoke to thought it was Hendrix.

Have to say my favourite on the boots is Education from Dublin rather than Zagreb and it's not just bias. The opening sounds tighter to me and the introduction was cool too.

In Dublin, Education was a nice surprise, but i remember being dissapointed when Ed said they were about to play a song for the first time, and i was thinking i was about to hear an Avocado b-side, but instead the opening to Education rang out.

I snapped out of it after about 20 secs, but that was my initial reaction.

I loved hearing that song in Dublin... true crowd reaction was pretty poor - we all thought a brand new b-side or something... but I was pleased with Education! Plus Eddie gave me his plec after they played it :)

:D Me too... I was probably pretty muted cos I was thinking 'new song, new song, yayyyyyyyy' and then I was thinking 'huh? This HASN'T been played before? so by the time it started my head had cleared it all up :D

This COULD have been the case for a lot of people... also some people probably just didn't know it :o

Yeah it did kick ass, despite ed's fuck up which was quite funny. I thought they might have played it as an opener after hearing the sound-check. Would have been pretty suitable after 7 years away from europe!
  • After hearing it in Dublin it really made me go back to Lost Dogs with a new set of ears, hearing it live made all the difference. Now its one of my favourites on the record!
