Yuck, I *hate* moving, but this move...I am just so DAMN EXCITED!

Currently packing the house...like 'shit just got real' packing. My mind is going .

Some hints so far:

*it's good to know other people who have recently moved...you can mooch boxes from them.
*it's also good to know people who work in retail stores and can get you boxes in all sorts of shapes/sizes.
*Costco is a great place to buy tape.
*Take advantage of Staples and their Back to School Sale-pack of Sharpies $5.
*it's good to have friends that have kids that happen to be college aged boys who will 'force' them to help you move (added bonus, they are under 21 so I can buy them off with pizza and not beer ).

Got anything to add?

We just had a big move to the country and it was REALLY hard because I couldn't help to lift anything heavy. cost us a small fortune to move our pool table because we left it until the last minute and hadn't realised that it was a public holiday so we paid through our arseholes.
Tip: don't leave organising a mover until the last minute and Don't move when your pregnant. :D

My biggest and most organised move yet is gladly behind me ... I don't envy you! I have always moved apartments with a car and some borrowed boxes. For moving countries, I had to order special boxes and make a list with everything. Thank god I did, that came in handy for the insurance claim

My advice would be, use the opportunity to get rid of stuff! Clean your slate, free yourself from all the things that just collected dust over the last years. Start fresh and new in the new place. It's a really good feeling :)

As for boxes, I can recommend banana boxes from the supermarket. I had the staff collect them for me for several moves. They are very durable and especially good for moving books.

Best of luck and lots of nerves and strength! I hope all goes well and nothing important breaks and you will keep your cool the whole time

Try to keep your eyes on the prize - the new place :D
  • Contact moving companies in your area and ask if they have any used boxes they want to get rid of. I was able to get a ton of good boxes this way the last time we moved.

Get a roll of butcher paper, from Smart and Final or a restaurant supply co, and use it to wrap up kitchen glasses, plates, pictures, or any breakable pieces. It's a lot cheaper than bubble wrap and works just as well since it is thick and there's a ton of it. You can crumble up the paper and put it in the glasses then wrap the outside with it.

Put clothes in trash bags still on the hanger to make it easier to move them.

    Good Luck on the move!

    Sadly, I don't have a pool table...I was going to get one...but, ah...someday!

Currently, I don't really have much time to go through "everything", but I have been coming across things that won't fit in a box and I will toss it in the donate box  . I do live close to a second hand store, so I will be able to get rid of stuff. We are getting rid of some bigger furniture, a queen bed and frame, dining table and chairs, coffee table, maybe a garage sale if I have the energy.

Banana boxes huh? I will have to see if the store will keep some for me...

right now, I am using wrapping paper to wrap the glass! I bought it at Costco oh...when I first moved to this house! and I've hardly used any-it's a really nice quality paper too-then I don't have to move all those big rolls of wrapping paper.

yes! we are moving the clothes that way...and there are some other things that I just won't let be put on the moving truck...like my poster case, or vinyl collection.

on the banana boxes, keep in mind there is a rectangular hole in the bottom for air to the nanas. There are sturdy as all get out but you would need to place something almost as sturdy in the bottoms. Maybe get some broken down boxes from a store? Good thing about these boxes is there are hand holds on each end.

heres MY tip. get stoned or drunk AFTER you're done!! NOT during or before.
    That is all.

    Good luck!

after moving, maybe 9 times in my life

    Home - College - Home - New Haven - Trumbull - Fairfield - NJ #1 - NJ #2 - Home - My House

It is completely worth it to bite the bullet and hire movers.

You need to be very careful when finding a moving company though. There are many scammers (it is also easy to see through once you are aware of this).

I knew this but I went against my better judgement. However, it made me slightly lazy, so I was much more willing to throw out everything.

but, if someone packs my shit, and moves my shit, and my shit gets broken, they don't care and I'm     . If I pack my shit and move my shit and my shit breaks I'm  and then get over it.

I discovered over the weekend that when you are doing laundry, packing up, cleaning, things are really crazy and you are wearing nothing else but boxers and a tank top...Jehovah Witnesses like to make visits to your house and get your opinion on porn. They seriously expected me to invite them in the house for a spot of tea and chat about how society is so addicted we are crumbling to pieces...

Just moved 3 weeks ago. Finally hired movers for the 1st time at the age of 30 and it was well worth it. The movers had great reviews on yelp and they turned out great. It is so much more enjoyable to just sit there and tell the guys where to put stuff instead of doing it yourself.

sounds like the plot to a decent enough porn movie.

blech, it's like it's never ending. (I admit, the last couple of boxes I started just tossing things into without any real organization)

I'm going out tonight...I'm sick of looking at boxes, tape and markers.

Congrats on your new place !!!

I have no helpful hints to give but I am taking some advice because I am moving too :D I have a new place that I move into the end of September ( I cant wait )... I have donated - clothes, books and toys, and it feels great to get rid of "stuff" that is just clutter.

I have hired movers called Two Men and a Truck - highly reputable in my area. They will take care of my big stuff and I will do the much smaller boxes.

I agree - I'm sick of boxes, tape and packing.... but its worth it

Get the Sharpies that are kind of flat on opposing sides (chisel tip) - they won't roll off a table, box, or whatever.

My mom taught me this 5 moves ago: use a large rubbermaid bin as a 'First Night Box,' for the essentials you'll want readily accessible the first night. Bath towels, clean sheets, pajamas, any medications you take, shower curtain and rings, toilet paper, hand soap, etc.

Moving boxes can often be found in the free stuff section on Craigslist.

Use beach towels to wrap picture frames. The extra padding goes a long way.

This takes advanced planning, but I used a years' worth of plastic dry cleaning bags (rolled onto larger-than-fist-sized balls) to protect breakables. Worked like a charm!

If you're hiring a moving company, ask if they provide complimentary wardrobe boxes (some do).

If the room a given box is meant for is written on the TOP of yhe box in addition to the side(s), people carrying them in are mire likely to put them where they belong.
