I can't believe the Gorge shows are one week away!!! There's a Gorge thread for just about everything, but I've seen a couple recent posts by people asking what to do during the day.

Some NW folks might not like that a SE guy is posting a thread like this, but we've been trying to gather all the tips from you locals - thanks aNiMaL and others (sorry, don't remember all the names) & we found some things online.

My wife and I are flying out from Atlanta, have been to Seattle, but not the Gorge area, and certainly looking to make a vacation out of this weekend. We'd love to meet up with other fans. PM/post if interested.

This may be helpful to some of you – it’s for stuff we’re thinking about each day - some of it's around Ellensburg since that's we're we are staying. By the way, if any of you have been there & don't recommend some of these places, let us know so we don't waste our time.

Friday (around Ellensburg)
* Japanese Gardens at CWU

* Raft Yakima River - We're renting a raft near Ellensburg

  • Hello. Well, I've been out there twice now, and know of a few things to hit up, but it looks as though you've covered a lot already - and thanks for doing the homework to save me the leg work! I'm personally coming with a van load of good friends, and also looks forward to meeting fellow Jammers and such, and with all the the socializing and otherwise great atmosphere at the Gorge campsite, I wasn't too worried about leaving to check out other things in the area. I guess it'll be a killer time regardless. Have a safe flight and all the rest!

You could always float the Yakima River around Ellensburg, too. Animal is doing that.

The one I heard on this tour was at about 5:00, but it probably varies.

soundcheck will be a lot earlier than other shows on the tour since the doors are open 3 hrs before show, which would be 4 PM, and the band is going to start playing at 7PM

I think noon is really early...I got there at 3pm last year and there were maybe 100 people in line?

Me too! Do you know if we can leave wildhorse with our cars once we drive in?
    NERDS!
  • I've been to the Gorge a bunch of times, but I haven't done a lot of weekend concerts there. Does anyone know of a place to swim around in the Columbia, besides vantage that is near the Gorge? If so how do you get there? Thanks for any feedback.

These are the two we found for swimming on the Columbia are a planning to go to both:
    * Ginkgo Petrified Forest/Wanapum Recreational Area

    * Crescent Bar – Beach, Wave runner rental, water skiing

Join us for rafting the Yakima if you'd like - the more we have, the cheaper it is. I think we're renting from this place just outside Ellensburg (they have all the gear and drive you up river).

I think aNiMaL is rafting further down the river, but with us flying in & not having our own gear, this rental set-up seemed the best way to go - unless aNiMaL or some of you others know a better way.

Can you watch the soundcheck inside or do you have to listen from outside the gates? (pardon my ignorance)

I was wondering the same thing. I want to stay in the same spot both nights. Maybe we can just leave our tents. We will raft or swim on Sunday. I think, I would prefer the Yakima because it is smaller and calmer (right?).

Anyone know how far from the venue to get to the Yakima and rent stuff?

Where I raft....errr float the Yakima is in Ellensburg....along Canyon road....through the canyon.....and we go as far as the Roza recreation area. Anywhere from 2 to 4 hours of floating....dpending on which stretch we choose to do.

But, it's about 45 minutes away from the GOrge.....when there is no traffic going to the Gorge......keep in mind that traffic will back up severly driving to the Gorge within a couple of hours before show time. Give your self PLENTY of time to get back before show time. that's why i am not sure if we will do any rafting the days of the shows......hence why we are leaving Wed night so we can raft thurs and fri. maybe a short run on Sunday if we get up and around early enough..... But for me that is also where I will be camping the whole time. :)

  • generally, you can leave Wildhorse in your car. The only thing that could prevent you from leaving is whether or not you can actually get your car out of the campground (it tends to get packed and the roads in and out are really thin). You will definately want to keep your tent up and stay in the same place both nights. Just like when you go to the show, you leave your tent and everything else there while you're gone. You would do the same during the day. Personally, I'll just be hanging out in the campground with everyone else.
