Those smart ads are all over the place for me.

I can't click onto any site on the internet without Lightning Bolt popping up as my ad.

Guess Big Brother knows me pretty well. :D

However when I clicked the Fox link, I did not get the ad.

Must just be in some rotation.

And lastly are they allowed to call themselves "News"? ;)

I get the same thing all over the place on my computer. If I scratch my head my computer tries to sell me Head and Shoulders. If I sneeze I get ads for Kimberly-Clark. Yes, I'm kidding but 10 to 1 gets that I will see ads from those two now that I've typed their names here!

There is a company called Akamai in Cambridge, MA. http://www.akamai.com/
One service that they provide is distributed content delivery.
This means companies like Amazon, YouTube, iTunes, etc... can store their content on redundant servers all over the world. Depending on your physical location, you will be directed to the server closest to you (or if a server goes down or is otherwise impaired, you will be redirected to the next closest available server - all done behind the scenes and under the covers (This service is quite necessary in order for eCommerce and video streaming to succeed).
In addition, as a side service to their main function, they track the content that they deliver as well as the things that you Google, and shop for and download (not your personal data, just your habits.)
They provide this data to their customers (I think they map your IP address and cookies to stored data in their databases) so that they can insert ads specific to your interests into the side bars of websites like cnn, fox etc...

Just a suggestion, sir... maybe it would be helpful to you if you understood how advertising works on the InterWebs. Just because your monitor looks like a T.V. screen... doesn't mean it is a T.V.
It'll may help save you from future embarassments... such as this one.

Well this explains why after looking up Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies all of a sudden I can meet and marry single asian women from all sorts of singles sites.

The poison from the poison stream caught up to you ELEVEN years ago and you floated out of here. Sept. 14, 08

Interesting, thanks for the info! These ads are very effective on a subliminal level. I try to train my brain to work against them in reverse. When I see an ad that targets my interests I turn on my "cynic" switch.

But f course, they probably still get me once in a while.

Funny, I rarely even look at the ads on the sites I go to.

Speaking of PJ, I was listening to Dave Ramsay (financial advice guy) on the radio coming back from lunch just now, and he closed out a segment with Dissident. He's used lots of PJ (and other good music) in that manner.

Nice little perk to my day :)

I never look at ads either, but when that lightning bolt banner is there there is no way to miss it. It's bold and says Pearl Jam in big letters. :)

Gotta love the random PJ music encounters!

  • Re-targeting ads. Every time you visit a site that is marketing heavily (like this one) you're going to get followed for around a month or until you visit another site who has stronger re-marketing campaign. The company I work for does this. If you don't want to see this, either use Ad-blocker or just delete your cookies like every hour.
    NERDS!
  • pretty much every page i go on gives me the adds for lightning bolt too.

is my browsing history really that limited?
