Police to invade pro-pot rally, hand out Doritos

See? Proof positive that cops aren't all bad.

The world’s largest pro-pot rally will be in Seattle this weekend – and police here are handing out free bags of Doritos.

The bags of nacho cheese-flavored chips will come with information about Initiative 502, the voter-approved initiative that made small amounts of marijuana legal for adult consumption in Washington.

“It’s meant to be funny and ultimately our No. 1 goal is community outreach and public education,” said Sgt. Sean Whitcomb, who also is speaking on a Hempfest stage Saturday. “It totally buys into the stereotype, but in this particular case, we feel that we’ll be getting our message out.”

The 1,000 bags of chips are paid for by the Seattle Police Foundation, so taxpayer money isn’t being used, Whitcomb said.

“A lot of people are confused and still have questions,” he said of I-502. “We want people to know the rules to follow the law and respect the vote.”

    sad & laim

the police officers of seattle should feel ashamed of themselves for being so frickin square & naive that they are going to do this. i'd turn the doritos down & request fruit & water. then challenge them to a swim off, pre & post bong rips & brownie sessions

I think they are. I'm guessing they have to be there anyway, so they're trying to do so in a fun and friendly way.

Plus, better Doritos than batons and mace ;)

If I were there, I'd definitely accept a bag!

I think its hilarious. And a damn fine way to show that they simply enforce the law and want to make sure folks know exactly what that means for the amounts. Sounds like the dept has a realistic attitude toward pot..

how cool. while I don't eat doritos myself I agree it's a good way to get the info out there...it's the gesture that counts

i haven't been to hempfest in 8 or 9 yrs, still it'd be interesting to see what difference legalization has made this year...

hmm, wonder if any of my peeps are heading down to seatown this weekend?

Police organizations are some of the biggest legalization proponents out there. Most cops want nothing to do with weed arrests. Of course, it only takes a few rotten apples...and I have trouble respecting anyone who can do something I see as morally wrong (arresting drug users), and blame it on 'the job'.
I think ending the war on drugs would be a huge step toward changing public opinion of the police. It would eliminate the majority of unpopular, non-violent arrests, and eliminate many of the excuses used to institutionalize racism.

I think its pretty cool they're doing this.

Nothing better than Doritos topped with pepper spray. But mace will do in a pinch.

    F Doritos. Here's the good stuff... http://groovygreenlivin.com/late-july-o ... -giveaway/
  • this is awesome.
i'm onboard with cops trying to actually act like human beings and let other human beings who have different habits (ie. stoners) know "hey man, like, we are people too, here is some information on the new drug laws you might find interesting, and hey, do you like the new flavor of doritos?"

    :D

Thank you for posting the pic! Really impressed with the Seattle PD. Just a great idea for engaging a community you have long had an adversarial relationship with.

Yah just saw a picture of them on my internet feeds.

I like the part where it says "you might be cited" ...

First, I couldn't repost he picture because of work Nazi's and secondly, if that was where I lived and u were caught smoking the "funny stuff" you would immediately placed in jail and given a minimum 6 month probation.

Marijuana legalization appears to be going well in Washington State.

Here's a picture of a Makisupa policeman helping a man light a marijuana joint that weighs two pounds at the Northwest Harvest Fest in Bow, Washington.

I just found out that Makisupa policeman is the name of a Phish song ... at that this may be an imposter

    Still pretty funny

Still though - look at that smile of his!
  • The cop didn't help light the joint, he confiscated it and cited the owner of the joint. The pic doesn't tell the whole story.
