Outside Lands - Day 1
So ok, I've been to well over 200 concerts in my life. I've been to a number of music festivals and they NEVER seem to crack into my Top 10, but they're generally a fun day for what they are.
Pearl Jam at Outside Lands in 2009 was pretty fun, but doesn't make my Top 10 shows.
Paul McCartney changed that before he was even a quarter of the way through his nearly THREE hour set on Friday! First time ever seeing any actual Beatle, and this wasn't your standard "Festival" appearance. This was a bonafide stop on his tour. The main festival stage was his stage, his lighting, his vid screens, his pneumatic rising platforms and everything. Probably his fireworks as well!
THIRTY EIGHT or so songs, I think there was like a 3 song medley at the end that pushed that to just about 40. How about a little FOXY LADY tag? You got it! How about pulling out the world renowned Kronos Quartet to accompany him on Yesterday, shazam! He played some bass, some keyboards, some guitar, what the heck, he covered George on the ukulele! Soooo much good music of course, he's got the best catalog in the world to play from.
Special for me was Oblidibladah and a few songs that neither he nor the Beatles had ever played in SF - ALL TOGETHER NOW! So Fun. And the concert just builds and builds and builds, so well scripted, building and building up to Live and Let Die, sing along with Hey Jude, then back up into Ticket to Ride, Get Back and Helter Skelter in the penultimate spot. So well paced. F'n genius set list.
Whole day was a blast, Smith Westerns and Surfer Blood got it started on the main stage, not bad, I was holding camp for my party so never really left. Band of Horses was probably the most hectic short of Paul. Good reception for them, good to see them again. The National have been on my list to see, didn't dissapoint, and had the Kronos Quartet play, and what the heck, it's SF, pull ol' Bob Weir out on stage why dontcha!
Had some awesome grilled cheese from a cool store out near the Giants' ballpark, hung out with very cool folks all holding our spots for seven hours up to Paul! And we made it stick, probably about 25-30 people from the stage, whole party made it's way back to me from Zedd just in time for Paul, neat little 15 minute DJ/Beatles mix slideshow intro. Just so well orchestrated.
DEFINTELY one of my Top 3 concert experiences now, (but no, you can't beat Alex walking over during 2112 and putting a pick in your wife's hand... or Eddie on your birthday!) Fantastic!

She wants to go to PJ in LA both nights. PJ and AIC are her faves. We've raised her right.
And he told the the mayor he'd like to play at candlestick before they tear it down (the site of the last Beatles concert ever....) I'm there!
