Future PJ album - the one
I know the band wants to make a legendary rock album that transcends time. Like a Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. I think I've heard them talk of it in different press releases. Here is the thing: they have become really good at efficiently producing albums. Working on stuff separately then coming together real quick and putting out some quality stuff. When I heard the comments from Brendan O'brien about their side projects and how the band used to spend alot more time jamming together it got me thinking. They are capable of it and Brendan knows it....but they just got to do it.
Timing is everything and I think it is great they do their own things especially if it keeps them together. But hey, would it kill them to take a few months, rent out a mansion, and jam everyday to produce the most organic surreal tracks. Like I said, timing is everything and I think it will be coming in the not so far future.
Now, I'm sure Lightning Bolt is going to be awesome....everything PJ is but were talking next level stuff here. They can do it and I think that is why Brendan sounded so frustrated about their side projects.
Anyone else contemplate this?

I think that they are really in the comfort zone mode now. Composing, than finishing and recording the song together - less studio time. But yeah, I agree with you; I think this approach would make a different album. (But will also cost more money I presume.) I would even like to throw the curve ball further out there, since we are in the realm of fantasies: don't go to a comfertable recording studio, but lock yourself in Ireland or Berlin or a basement - another country, another setting, other sounds - and see what happens and agree to record the song in one take. That will bring back the "rough" and spontaneous sound and the danger of overthinking too much...
In my opinion however, they already made their Dark Side of the Moon. It is called Vitalogy.

Every great band makes a double album. The Beatles, the who, smashing pumpkins, red hot chili peppers. Why not pj?Edmonton 93, Vancouver 05, Vancouver 09, Edmonton 11, Vancouver 110

It sure appears at this point in their careers it ain't going to happen. They don't seem to enjoy the studio as a band these days to crank out two solid discs of music.0 -

Wasn't Lost Dogs kinda a double?0 -

Come on, 40. You know you're cutting corners on that one.
But yeah, I totally agree with what you said before. I wish they could find that spark again. I'm not blaming them for what seems to be a little lack of interest. It must be like a marriage and in that way it probably is more inspiring to work with new people on other things but if would be incredible if somehow they came together to do something totally out of the norm for them. We still have time I think. In the scheme of things they are still young. All of their heroes who are still alive are still making music!0 -

Its not a true album. It is a compilation of b sides and songs that didn't make albums.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0 -

I think about this all the time mcrok... I think I can tell from the feel of the last two albums that things werent produced as a collective from the inception.Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0 -
I would love to hear what the band thinks about this.
I really believe they put out very good records, very solid songs... it doesn't have that *filler* song in there. You can hear the damn things from top to bottom and don't get tired.
But since they left Sony, for some reason... everything has been TOO precise. I believe it happens because now they have a responsibility... if they fail, they can break the bank. With Sony it was some big record company money that if sinks they don't loose nothing. Now they are the ones paying for everything, now they have something to loose.
I think that very soon they will find their footing on this new environment and will take more chances.
We are not going to die tomorrow. No rush there. In a near future they will discover that this band is the best thing they have and the side projects will calm down. A lot bands have gone thru this before. In love with music0 -
Jeff Ament says that he thinks the band's best album still hasn't been made yet, and he thinks it's still going to to happen, for what it's worth (which isn't much). With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

The closest they'll ever come to the great Zeppelin, Beatles, Floyd, etc albums was the material from Ten-Riot Act.
If you wanna talk general consensus, Ten is probably the only album of theirs that will ever be mentioned among other all time great albums.
History shows that bands don't put out their best work at this stage in the game. It's just not how creative peaks work.0 -
Well never say never. We don't know what they might come up with in the future. But in any case, I am not waiting for PJ to come up with something like Led Zeppelin, because they're PJ. Also, I think they have already rivaled those bands that you mentioned so they've already jumped that hurtle. Are they expected to do it twice?DewieCox wrote:The closest they'll ever come to the great Zeppelin, Beatles, Floyd, etc albums was the material from Ten-Riot Act.

I'm not expecting them to make anything that sounds like Zeppelin, Floyd etc etc, either. I was referring back to the original post about putting out an album that transcends time. I agree that they've already done that with Ten, so I guess, no, they don't have to jump the hurdle twice. But it seems like the op has a different opinion.
PJ has put out better, more creative albums than Ten, but the other bands I think we're talking about managed to evolve creatively and still keep that mass appeal. Those bands' back catalogs or archival releases have generally moved more units than whatever PJ album you want to stack against them. I'd argue that almost every PJ album from their first decade belongs on any "greatest off all time" list, but big sales and widespread adoration is what generally gets those albums a spot on those lists.
In a way they have, but they've never had the longstanding mass appeal that bands of that stature had.
I'm not saying never, just pointing out how unlikely it is for that to happen. Give me another band that's put out their best work 20+ years into their career.
Far as a double album goes....I think they gave up any chance of that when they put out Lost Dogs. The last several album haven't had the extra tracks for a "warts and all" like the White Album or Physical Graffiti. I also don't think they've shown the ability or wont to compose a full concept, like The Wall or Quadrophenia, that can carry through a whole album.0 -

Well, cutting them a bit
. To be honest though, I think they still have some surprises for us left. I have this distinct feeling that LB will be followed by some kinda outtake album or an EP or something. I think they want to get the new stuff out there first, but a quote that Ed made during the London concert in 2010 (regarding OTE) and the reaction on the songs we won't speak about, I have this feeling that there is more stuff coming.
That said however; yeah, I would like to see them out of their comfort zone. But that they didn't, doesn't mean necessarily this is going to be a bad album or a BS 2 (which some seem to be afraid of). It is way too early to tell. I think that this album will have its own flavour and texture. In the end we know too little.
But a change of spice, or another approach, will def. shake things up and in return will create other artistic dynamics. I don't think that they are in this zone right now, but that doesn't mean that they will be in this comfort zone forever. I would like to see an album with more cultural influences and, in extent of this, more musical challenges.
So far we know however, LB could be just that. In the interviews they keep repeating that this album is somewhat different and experimental. (Comparisons punk and pink floyd are made.) I don't take too much stock in that. (Since "experimental" can be widely interpreted.) But this will undoubtedly be a diff. album than BS. MYM was in many ways already different. It wasn't clear punk. There were some speed metal influences intergrated there...
It is late and I am rambling. Forgive me.0
