Mammary shape by era??

My wife and I were discussing the shape of the female breast and how it has seemed to change since the sixties/seventies..

In film, we have noticed that breasts back in the day seem to be flat, pancake-ish, and more "ramp-like"

nowadays it seems that they are more round and full.. and I am not talking about the surgically enhanced ones..

nipples seem to be smaller now as well..

discuss

I think part of it is that chicks nowadays take better care of themselves and workout more.
Girls who are more fit tend to have less fat in their chest....less sag...and more upper body muscle, and a tighter core. All make for better looking chest.

It's a great era we live in!

Also, chicks these days put off marriage and families to a later age. Back in the day, they'd get hitched at 18-20, squeeze out some kids. We all know what marriage and kids do to chicks..... ladies!

It's not all sag. A strong upper body and core defines more than just abs.

I proposed this as well.. Bra's from that era may have supported in a different way? thus, forming the breast into something Tony Hawk does kick-flips off of? I feel this could be a very supporting argument..

Also, the areola (?) seems to have been bigger than nowadays. Look for the seduction scene in The Graduate (at around 8:44), this is the kind we are talking about. I'm personally thinking it could maybe have to do with food. But I don't know. It is just weird that they look so different. Almost cylindric. Very pointed. Not saggy.

I don't think bras have to do with that. I think the bra-argument was just a means to get women in the more modest eras to wear bras.

Interesting observation. Of course, as you know, breasts come in all different shapes and sizes (see video: How Porn Sex is Different from Real Sex). Watching movies from the 40s, 50s and early 60s you'd think that most women would have a shape like Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield: hour-glass. A lot of that was the shape-wear of the day: Bullet bras and corsets. Very much a standard female shape due to the materials that bras and girdles were made from.

The late 60s and the 70s were literally more free, as in no support, which naturally lead to the imposition of gravitational forces. Think back to National Geographic ;) With the creation of better, read lighter, more flexible lingerie, and keeping in mind the ruinous effects of said gravity on the aforementioned breasts, women (and men) embraced once again, the saviour of well-fitting clothes known as the bra.

And that marks a return to the board for me after a very long hiatus

    Did someone say boobs? :D

I have noticed the same thing...it's very easy to pick out the decade a film was made just by looking at the mammary shape. For instance, in late 70's/early 80's slasher films (always plenty of boobs), the majority of boobs are itty bitty. I think some of the trend has to do with whatever female body shape is "in" during that time. This doesn't always hold true, but the trend is there. Let's look at the 50's and 60's, the female body was more curvy in general, thus a fuller mammary shape...along came the disco era of the 70's and early 80's, being very skinny was in..goodbye boobs. Afterall, the main components of boobage is mammary glands and fat.

I do not think bras have anything to do with it as Lisa mentioned...as we all know, I am an advocate of free boobing and I will say that there is very little sagging sans bra. I don't have any kids, but I would say for my age, it's somewhat impressive (if I do say myself).

Anyway..I think the volume over time is dependent on diet...I'm not sure if the shape is also affected by this, but it's a good guess. The way our food is processed has changed dramatically in the recent decades.
Show #13 was a lucky one for me....

I blame global warming. Or Bush.

Boobs are exquisite, and their evolution is important to science. Thank you for this thread. :P

Im pretty sure the magnetic poles have something to do with that particular style. Again, thanks science.

I agree...maybe the primary differences that you're noticing have more to do with the casting of actresses and their body type. Perhaps back in the earlier eras, movie producers & casting directors were looking for actresses with a certain shape, and those tastes and trends have simply changed over the years. I'm sure back then, women existed with more 'modern' looking breasts, and vice versa with woman existing today with a more old fashion shape.
