What setlist staple would you give a break?

In both American legs during the 2000 tour, Alive was omitted, with Seattle 2 being the only exception. This got me thinking, what song could really use a tour-long break, and what rarity would you replace it with?

For me, I would cut Even Flow. My reasoning? Besides being the most played song on Pearl Jam history, when it isn't played, I don't miss it. It's not a song that I really pop for. If i'm listening to a boot and they start playing it, my reaction is, "Oh it's Even Flow." Now don't get me wrong, I love the song, it's got great intensity, Mike's solo is always a must-hear, but if it wasn't played at all during this upcoming North American tour, I would probably appreciated it better come 2014.

And as for what rarity would I replace it with, Alone. While it might seem odd to replace one Ten-era song with another, I feel that Alone doesn't get the love from the band that it should. It's got that classic Stone Gossard riff to it, fantastic lyrics, and a very unique vibe to it. It might not be the best Pearl Jam song every written, but I just feel that playing this song only once a tour is too little.

So what staple would you bench? And what song would you bring up to bat?

Jeremy. If that's asking too much, then RITFW. Love both songs, but have heard them more than enough to last me a good long time.

ole not a staple but I like last kiss better

I deeply love all of the above except ole but the one downfall of seeing them too much is, they wore them out for me.

I can think of more than a few replacements... like more---rival, whipping, blood, fatal, last exit, tremor christ, footsteps, leash, oceans, wash, red mosquito, in my tree, wma, all those yesterdays...ect. ect. ect.

I think it's pretty safe to say....most people attending have seen them multiple times and would love a show without the "radio" favs.

C'mon PJ bust out the goodies for this tour!

    Can't complain with that ^^!!

But we have to realize the staples are there for the folks who don't know all the songs. Even in Missoula every few songs a dude was shouting FLOW!!! And when they didn't play it he was shocked...

Not that I love the song but I understand it. Plus it's even flow! That song helped make pj famous because its a kick ass rock song.

RITFW is the top of my list of things that have got to go. Baba O'reilly could go as well. Daughter needs a break. I'm not a fan of Daughter live. The endless tapering off, ad-hoc call and response and then it dies a slow death like a cancer patient.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

forgot given to fly, elderly woman, go,why go. it would just be great to completely mix it up again like they used to i.e. dte center michigan 2 nights 61 songs 1 the same. way too much great material to make tours now from groups of songs with a few nuggets with format mostly the same . other bands do that i always thought this one would be different.

Setlist rotation's all well and good, but I want to hear "Alive," "Given to Fly," and "Do the Evolution" every single time I see Pearl Jam. The night just doesn't feel right without them; I think the absence of "Alive" is why I didn't love the 2000 tour (and yes, I understand why it wasn't played, but the show didn't feel complete without out).

I've seen five "Even Flow" free shows, and it's not a song whose absence I lament. But that doesn't mean I don't want to hear it anymore, and certainly not as long as Mike and Matt keep playing out of their skins. ;)

Lose the covers, play only PJ songs - simple!

I love a lot of the covers that they play but I haven't seen a PJ-only setlist since 2000. I think it would be great if they played a covers-free tour to support their 10th album, just celebrate their own songs.
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)
  • I've already had it with Just Breathe. I'd take RITFW as a 20 minute jam to open the show over Just Breathe at this point.

I'd pick Grievance off the top of my head too. Good song, but it's just strange to me that Grievance has become like the only song from Binaural with concert staying power. I'd like to see it go away if for no reason other than to replace it with some lesser played Binaural songs.

I'm actually okay with Even Flow/Corduroy/Alive/Daughter/Better Man because of the crowd reactions they produce.

Yup. WMA for sure. Would love more Who You Are. Was listening to some 08 boots and loved that and In My Tree.
  • I'm definitely in favor of more Riot Act songs. That's the only tour I've missed since 98 and have regretted it since.

Someone mentioned In Hiding. Good call!

There are some songs like Betterman, Small Town, Given to Fly, etc., that are staples but always enjoy seeing performed.

To me, the only one is Just Breathe.
It has been a static song, slotted at the same time, nearly every show for 4 years.
