How does Ed keep his voice from blowing?
Does anyone know how Ed keeps his voice from blowing out? I can't imagine ever playing 2hour+ shows and still being able to sing (or even speak) by the end.
Also, anyone know what scales or formations Mike Mcready uses in his solos? I've been a long admirer of mike, and have learned some of his riffs by ear, but I'd love to know some of the technical stuff behind his playing.
After 22 years, pj is sill the best band ever!

I've been a Pearl Jam fan since I was 13 and first heard Ament's opening to Jeremy on the radio. To this day, Pearl Jam continues to inspire and challenge me to not just be better, but to be great.

He did blow his voice back in 1995 though. 1994 was Eddie's finest year vocally. 1998 and 2000 were very good as well.
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
What we need is another world tour ala 2003 + Europe
Now that was a great touring year! The 2000 tour wasnt too shabby either.
This
I just worry that Ed will end up sounding like today's Bob Dylan if he doesn't take care of his voice.
Hahaha!

True.. All the live shows during 95-98, which ironically is the time jack was with the band, Ed sounded like he was puking on the mic during heavier songs like blood..
I dis agree about 94, as 2003, 2000 and 1998 were probably the best vocal years.
Ed sounded great at wrigley. Europe 2012, some shows were great vocals, some were not bad but he was struggling.
Ill take a struggling EV anyday over anyone else tho... Not gonna lie!!
91 - there was little edge to his vocals, so he had a young sound. Even in speaking, you can hear a 'youngness' I hs voice.
92 - Europe tour 92 something happened (I suspect it was the thing from pj20 about seeing fans getting trampled by security guards) - at any rate, best vocal performances by and large IMHO.
93 - some very good performances, but you can hear some cracks. Many time, It feels like he is scratching the words into the mic
94 - the scratching/screamo sound gets more pronounced. You can really hear it on the altanta live cd (btw I still hate Sony for making me pay 25 thrice for 7 songs per disc) - I actually refused to buy the last two discs. Haha. Now it's everywhere on the Internet.
95 - terrible scratchiness developes, but there are some gem performances. The Australia show with the mw speech highlights that. It's tough to listen to at times.
96 - gets better vocally, but something has clearly changed. Ed's voice is also getting deeper.
98 - Ed is almost a completely different vocalist. The scratchiness is gone, but there is now a high pitched squeal (around 2 kHz for the technically inclined) that permeates a lot of his vocals. I think he is singing from his neck here. This stays pretty well throughout the next 10 years, but There are shows here and there that buck that trend.
Fast forward to 2010/2011 --- I was listening to msg2010 and buenos area 2011 and noticed that it was a beautiful mix of the new Eddie vedder, and the classic vedder from early on. I think it has to do with the way he sings higher melody notes. Instead of tightening up, and squealing them out through his neck, he is opening up his diaphragm more and singing from his gut.
