Living in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area -

Does anyone on the message board have any good insight on where some decent areas are located in order to live in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area? I've done one of those cost of living checks at a couple of websites and it appears that Ft. Lauderdale, generally speaking, has a higher cost of living than Miami. Are toll roads a big issue when traveling between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami? I assume that the crime rate is higher in Miami.
The Palm Beaches/Boca Raton area is the nicest part of SE Florida, but too far of a daily commute down to Miami.
