PLU Chart for Produce

A friend sent this to me. I find it hugely helpful in making healthier choices in my grocer's produce department (I don't have a photo of one of these labels but they are little stickers that are often on fruits and vegetables. Look for the four or five digit number. The first number is the one the chart refers to):

PLU Chart for Produce

American readers should print this chart, and always take it with them when
they go grocery shopping. When Americans buy fruits and vegetables
individually, there is usually a small sticker on them. This sticker will
include a 'PLU' number. The first digit in that number is significant.

The Meaning Of The PLU First Digit On Fresh Produce

8

The product is definitely genetically modified (G.M.O.), and almost any
chemical may have been used on it, at any time. It is a toxic Frankenfood.
Please avoid, and boycott whichever company is producing it.

3

The product is likely genetically modified (G.M.O.), and almost any chemical
may have been used on it, at any time.

4

The product was 'conventionally grown' with synthetic fertilizers and chemical
pesticides. Make note that there is a new generation of pesticides cannot be
washed off, because these pesticides are fed to the roots, and infuse into
every cell of the plant. These 'conventionally grown' foods have
approximately 1/10th of the nutritional value of equivalent organic produce,
and are significantly less flavorful.

9

This is the highest quality produce, the most nutritious, the most natural,
and the most safe. The product is organic (non-G.M.O.), and it was grown
without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or any chemicals whatsoever.
These are truly all-natural. When you see a PLU number beginning with 9,
think purity and extremely high nutritional value. For example, an apple with
a PLU of 9 will usually be more nutritious than a bowl of PLU 4 spinach.

I hope so- at least hope it's none of it's a number 8, Frankenfood!

Thank you for sharing this. I'm printing this out and bringing it with me every time I shop for produce.
    I lost a bet...

before even reading, I was going to say "just pick 9"

I found this out awhile ago when buying and looking into juicers, etc....Amazing how much quicker the organic apples and such go bad once bitten....this, I think is a good thing:)

Yeah, I buy organic (9) whenever possible.
Sad that we as consumers have to pay more for food that hasn't been screwed with. The food industry in this country is seriously f'd! :x

I pretty much buy everything with a '9' on it.

I do have to give a shout out for organic meats too-a few years ago, I was actually thinking about going vegetarian because I started to dislike the taste of meat. Tried organic chicken... :o organic grass fed beef...*drool*

(I can't stand eating chicken from a restaurant now...there is that much of a difference!)
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

While I try to limit my meat intake (haven't had red meat or pork in 17 years, but I do eat birds and fish), organic chicken and turkey is the only way to go! Such a huge difference! Yeah, it often costs twice as much, but I figure it's worth every penny!

I like how the GMO Shopping App is only available for iPhones...Android people eat clean too.
