Any word on what he was doing with the knife? was the teen assaulting someone?

Maybe the first shot was an accident then.. I know in the states, cops are instructed to "shoot to kill" .. 7 or 8 shots on a guy with just a knife seems excessive.. especially at that range.. a knife poses no threat.. unless the cat was gesturing like he was going to throw it at the cop? in which case, he deserves what he got.. aside from someone on the bus being in grave danger or the knife throwing posture, the cop is way in the wrong..

did they tazer him as well? About the 1:35 mark you can hear a buzzing sound.....might have been a tazer. If so, holy cow, he was either really tough or the cop missed on the 1st 5 shots

  • The one thing that I have yet to hear or read is why the bus was empty. Did he threaten one person? A bus full of people? Did the fuzz yield to much force? Of course! Should somebody have a knife out in pubic? Of course not! When these two things meet, somebody may loose. But hey the mom from Syria said " he was only waving a knife". Don't know about her country, but I know you shouldn't do it here.

Yes they did taser him after they filled him full of lead. If as you state they did hit him.

this is a clustercuss of epic proportions ... i would boil it down to poor training ...

    these are the facts:
    * sammy had a small knife
    * there were no other passengers or people on the streetcar

basically, the police came in with an aggressive response which lead to sammy being shot 9 times and then subsequently tasered ... the shooting officer is currently suspended with pay ...

sammy was a migrant from syria who by all accounts was a good kid ... he appears to have had a mental illness of some sort ...

there is no way that a kid that is of no threat to anyone else should end up dead ...

Thanks for shedding some light on the situation ... Very unnecessary tragic end. Just love how the cop is suspended with pay, while anyone else would be in jail.

although there is at least an SIU here vs. cities like say New York ... it still is pretty much a self-enforced entity ... the recent trials associated with the G20 protests are a clear sign of that ...

i think that the toronto police for the most part do a decent job and it's obviously not an easy job but it still is run like an old boys network ... and we all know that organizations that are run in that matter ultimately fail ...

hopefully, with all the media attention - we will get the whole truth ... we will likely get an inquest and the same recommendations made by the experts will once again be ignored ...

Jebus that was a lot of shots. Either the cop missed or the kid was on meth, right? I mean who needs that many shots (or ANY shots, I suppose, depending on the circumstances) to subdue someone with a knife?

pretty sad when 9-10 cops can not stop a 17 year old with a small knife without resorting to deadly force ... after all they are the one that are supposed to be trained, and use restraint.

    * Edited. Never saw the kid on the bus the first time I watched the video. I had thought he was behind the bus and we couldn't see what had transpired. This was handled very poorly and it is a tragedy.

I'd agree: the kid did not deserve to die.

    * I just watched a liveleak video of a cop trying to talk down a guy with a knife. Proved to be a mistake... he was overtaken, shot in the head, and then killed with his own pistol. I'd post the link if I could find it, but I'm apparently not that savvy navigating liveleak. You'll have to trust me.

I'm not defending or accusing anyone in this situation. There were a lot of shots fired and clearly it looks like, at a minimum, overkill or excessive force. But my obvious point is that cops seemingly cannot win: exercise great restraint and sometimes get killed... be too aggressive and be labelled a murderer.

You have said Sammy was a great kid and maybe he was, but did the officers know this? They operate at face value. Again... I'm not necessarily defending this cop: it doesn't look right. But I'd like to speak to other cops.

I know several cops and I respect them. They are good people. There are some- such as the 'champion' I started a thread for a few days back in this forum- that leave much to be desired; but unless I have a heightened level of sensitivity for these officers, it seems as if this board is a little too eager to jump all over these guys and collectively paint them with an unflattering broad brush for the actions of a few. I hear terms like 'police state' and 'pig' too often that, at least to me, really show a lack of respect and contribute to the dehumanization of people committed to service.

The spectrum of police behaviours and responses is wide with extreme examples such as the two scenarios in this post on either end. My concern is that this board tends to ignore the countless situations handled well by police officers in the line of duty performing well on a daily basis.

    http://news.ca.msn.com/canada/video.asp ... 9889739300

72 year old man, after threatening Hydro workers and shooting at police, is apprehended from his barricaded home. Police never returned deadly fire and got the job done in professional fashion.

    * Strange case. The man was a former professor, avid gun collector, and according to neighbours was a little hostile on occasion. I'll follow this one from my corner of the world.

    Watched again.

Never saw it correctly the first time. Commented without proper context.

    This is bad.

I'm sure more will come to light about the drugs, booze, and whatever else this good kid was up to.

I'm sure more will come to light about the drugs, booze, and whatever else this good kid was up to.

Does any of that really matter? Watching the video makes it pretty apparent that this kid wasn't much of a threat to anyone. Yes, he may be a troubled youth and he definitely looks hostile but there was nobody around for him to actually harm.

Perhaps they should have used the taser first. There were apparently twenty-three cops on site and they couldn't manage to bring in an 18 year old kid alive.
  • very bad situation. But I just shake my head when, in the aftermath, the victim is almost always called "a good kid" by their relatives and friends. My definition of a "good kid" doesn't wave a knife around at innocent people and force them off a bus and then refuses to drop it when told by gun-weilding police officers.

    but that's just me.

no way this kid should have died though.

I agree with all of this.

I also have looked at your other post and have to wonder why, when the kid was contained on a bus and unable to flee or attack, was lethal force used when- as you said- rubber bullets or a taser might have been used?

2+ weeks since this happened, barely hear it mentioned, and no charges against cop. If this was just average joe blow citizen you can bet there'd be charges ... what a disgrace.

What do you expect? It is the police? They have their clique and that is the way we as the public are supposed to swallow it.

Look up yesterday's story about the Durham cop who (we know most cops have shit for brains) made a fake oh never mind here it is......http://www.torontosun.com/2013/08/08/an ... ce-officer

  • Different scenario: Same kid is waving the knife around on the bus at people, (which he was doing). My friend and I who are riding public transit beat the asshole to death to solve the problem. It is on video from the gawkers. Should we get charged for saving all the others on the bus and doing the right thing?
