11 Most Embarrassing Best Selling Albums All Time

11) "Some Gave All" by Billy Ray Cyrus
9x platinum. The Wikipedia entry on this says it all: "Thanks to the video of , there was an explosion of line dancing into the mainstream, becoming a craze." Thank God we survived.

10) "Hi Infidelity" by R.E.O. Speedwagon
9x platinum. Arguably the worst band of the '70s, Speedwagon squeezed six songs from this one album onto the charts.

9) "Hybrid Theory" by Linkin Park
10x platinum. If teens drive record sales, then there appears to have been a massive undiagnosed wave of male youth psychosis and depression at the beginning of the 2000s.

8) "Please Don't Hurt 'Em" by Hammer
10x platinum. MC Hammer was the biggest thing on the planet at one point...that planet has since been vaporized by an asteroid.

7) "Human Clay" by Creed
11x platinum. Creed may have pulled the trigger in the death of rock n' roll, but America was apparently a co-conspirator.

6) "Forrest Gump Official Soundtrack" by Various Artists
12x platinum. This album is basically a baby boomer's list of greatest hits. "The Big Chill" soundtrack already tried this but apparently Gump did it better.

5) "Breathless" by Kenny G
12x platinum. Turns out Kenny G is a pretty cool dude, even if no one really listens to his music anymore.

4) "Yourself or Someone Like You" by Matchbox Twenty
12x platinum. All right, we get it: Remember the '90s? AND IS THERE SOME SORT OF PILL OUT THERE TO FORGET THEM???

3) "Bat Out Of Hell" by Meat Loaf
14x. To paraphrase Norm MacDonald, this proves the improbable theory that PEOPLE LOVE MEATLOAF. Just not anyone we know.

2) "Supernatural" by Santana
15x platinum. We knew this album was everywhere in 1999...but this everywhere???

1) "Come On Over" by Shania Twain
20x platinum. It would take too long and cause too much heartache to say how many more people bought this album than others, but let's just say it sold more copies than The Beatles' "White Album."

I myself am guilty to contributing to the success of 5 of these albums ... I sentence myself to five face palms!

Guilty of Forrest Gump as well as Matchbox Twenty
Forrest Gump soundtrack is really damn good but yes, it is of course, just a greatest hits compilation of music from the 60's. And at the time, I thought the Matchbox Twenty was actually a really great pop album.

I'd have to disagree with the Forrest Gump soundtrack. It's got a huge list of songs that come from great albums. And I doubt if those songs appeared by themself you wouldn't be calling it "embarrassing".

My guilty would be Linkin Parks "Hybrid Theory". I was, and still kind of am, into that album once in awhile. Just a boom sounding cd to play video games too.

Some of the blame lies on Columbia House for my high total ... or perhaps being high had to do with my high total

I think Forrest Gump made it because it's basically a greatest hits infomercial marketed with a movie.

#9 for me. I thought the Forrest Gump soundtrack was decent. A bit bloated, if you ask me but not bad. I didn't contribute to it. My parent's did though.

I own the Matchbox Twenty one, great pop-rock album to my ears - probably helps that they were never particularly big here in the UK so weren't played to death on the radio etc.

There are a few I would have added to the list ...

The Bodyguard Soundtrack - 17X platinum
Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked View Mirror - 16X platinum

... and who in the hell convinced everyone in my high school that The Steve Miller Band actually produced "greatest hits". I want that person beaten.
  • DewieCoxDewieCox Posts: 11,429
I gotta disagree with 2 of those.

Forrest Gump Soundtrack is just amazing....Sure it's Time Life Baby Boomer's Hits Collection, but it's full of great songs.

Bat Out of Hell....Is it over the top? Hell yeah, but there's hardly a better arranged album and like it or not Meat Loaf could fucking belt it out. The title track, alone is redemption for all the cheese on the album.

Guilt free on this list... but that doesn't mean I don't have other musical guilty pleasures.

I have a clean slate with regard to this list. :)

Yeah, but it's damn good. Nothing wrong with a compilation. Elvis, Wilson Pickett, CCR, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Simon & Garfunkel, The Doors, Willie Nelson, Skynyrd, The Byrds, etc. Ain't nothing wrong with any of that. And some of these songs are by bands I probably wouldn't have bought an entire album by. I really have no interest in any other Three Dog Night song than "Joy To The World", same goes for The Youngbloods and "Get Together".

April Wine is awesome. Loved growing up with these guys as a staple band.

This makes me want to listen to the Forrest Gump OST!

And I made fun of my first girlfriend for having that Linkin Park album, but I think I could appreciate it now.

fuck that. this album introduced 16 year old me to a ton of songs by a wide range of artists. it no doubt expanded my musical taste from the typical stuff 16 year olds were listening to.

Yeah, if you're embarrassed by enjoying that collection of songs, you're just not a cool individual.

I'm not too proud to say that I have the matchbox twenty album. In fact, I have all of them. They're harmless and seemed to have gained some credibility. I actually saw them on this tour and one of the tunes that played before them was Pearl Jam's "Ghost". So they must have a good taste in music of PJ deep cuts.

Why the Forrest Gump soundtrack did it better than "The Big Chill" soundtrack? It had a better movie backing it.

I had Meat Loaf and not surprised it is a best-seller. It is highly entertaining.

I had number 10 on analog cassette (remember those?) when I was a kid.
I don't think they were the worst band of the 70s by a long shot. Bread, anyone?
I have the REO Speedwagon album You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish on CD. It's not bad.
