Was PJ contractually obligated to provide b-sides?

Wanted to talk about music for a bit instead of bs ticket threads...
The last album we had b-sides for was Riot Act... which was also their last album when signed to Epic... is this a coincidence? Anyone know if that is something a record label can demand... probably helps sales quite a bit w/ singles.

While being independent gives them a certain kind of freedom, that they can basically do what they want, when they want, how they want, where they want, I could see it being constrictive on what songs they wanna record now or just "toss away" as sort of a freeby. On the other hand, when they had the backing of a huge company, they probably had money to basically throw away and could spend time recording whatever they felt like, where now they'd be doing it on their own dime.0

Bet it also was cooler giving out B-sides when it was an actual B-side those people buying the CD/vinyl got and not everyone on mp3 one hour later."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0

Personally, I miss B Sides. They were a cool little extra that went with your collection. Sometimes the B Sides were better than what made the album, and it made you wonder why it was left out, like Yellow Ledbetter, why was this left off Ten? And Down, why that never made Riot Act we'll never know.0

That's a good question. My thinking is that Lost Dogs was a contractual obligation, but I'm not sure if I read that or just made it up in my head.0

Are b-sides even possible in a digital era?
I miss CD singles.0 -

I think b-sides are now more along the lines of "itunes exclusive" tracks, etc.0
