Bye Bye MSG?

The New York City Council notified Madison Square Garden on Wednesday that it has 10 years to leave its current location and find a new home.
MSG is owned by James Dolan, who also owns the building's main tenants in the NBA's Knicks and the NHL's Rangers. Dolan and MSG recently requested its special operating permit be renewed in perpetuity, but the city council instead decided on 10 years. The city plans to renovate Penn Station, a mass transit hub that sits under the Garden. The news also comes only months before MSG's three-year, $1 billion renovation is scheduled to be completed.

I'll believe it when I see it. Especially with the money the Dolans are pumping into it.

Penn Station is literally hell on earth. I can't wait for it to be renovated. It is going to be worse in the interim, I would imagine.

As much as I love that building and my memories from it, wouldn't it be great to see James Dolan get so royally fucked over?

Someone told me a few years back that the dolans tried to buy the post office across the street and make it msgII. But after pumping $1 billion into the building, I can't believe they'd bounce after 10 years.

I believe the lease is only done in 10 years increments.

As much as Dolan is a tool,
I dont think theyd spend 1 billion dollatrs to move again down the road.

iI think its just another publicity stunt.

MSG II closed in 1925. The current arena is the fourth one by that name. The next one will be MSG V.

Why would they ever extend a lease forever?

    Dolans requested. City said no.

Much ado about nothing. As others have said - why would they renew in perpetuity (and why wouldn't Dolan ask?)?

Formality. They are not kicking out a tax payer like MSG.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Madison Square Garden will recoup the cost of its billion-dollar renovation sooner than many assume, experts now say, bolstering a city move to relocate the world's most famous arena.

The company could earn back the $980 million spent on the massive renovation in as little as five years if revenue from its media operation, MSG Networks, is counted, Crain's New York reported.

RELATED: YES, NOW IS THE TIME TO MOVE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

Madison Square Garden needs city approval to stay at its current location, but officials hope it will clear out to make way for an improved Penn Station. The city is recommending just a 15-year extension at its current site.

Garden officials argue that's unfair because of how much money they just sank into the three-year renovation. "We have a right to a return on our investment," MSG Chief Executive Hank Ratner told Crain's.

But the company as a whole is expected to generate $700 million over the next four years, meaning it could recoup the full cost of renovation in 2018, well before an eventual move.

When I heard this my first reaction was 'yea right, like that's ever gonna happen' but then I remembered MSG's history... I can't speak to the state of Penn Station as I never ever ever go there unless absolutely necessary, but I would imagine there must be some way they can get their renovations done with the garden still on top of them?

Where would it even go at this point?

Up. Like everything else in NYC. The garden is not going anywhere.
