wow. Thats still pretty damn awesome. So that was like September 1991? How many people were there? Were people digging the music? Lukewarm?

Yeah, I guess I should have added Mookie Blaylock. They changed in what, March 1991?

They opened for the Pumkins {Gish} and the RHCP {Blood Sugar Sex Magic}. I've been to over 300 shows and this was the best line - up I've seen.

    Wow!

They were pretty much unknown at that point. I have been digging up the old, old stuff and I find it amazing to hear them tear up little places like Dobbs in Philly... and hearing the crowd reaction is lukewarm. On the recording from LA on the Mookie Blaylock tour in February 1991, there are a couple dudes who sound floored by the music.

But it is cool to hear how crisp they were back then, even before Ten came out. I would have loved to have had that experience to see them back then and to be a big fan now to look back.

It's an amazing story. PJ20 does a great job of explaining the early days.

Stone and Jeff were old pros. Mike right behind them. It took Eddie awhile to warm up to being on stage but the other guys had been doing it for quite some time and had been in very popular bands in that area.

  • i saw them about a month before ten came out. i had the temple of the dog record because i was already a huge soundgarden fan, and knew a little about the scene in seattle because i worked at my college radio station and tried to listen to just about everything that came in. when i got ten, porch was the only one i really remembered from the show.i may have even gotten into the show for free, even though it couldn't have been more than 5 bucks. got to talk to jeff briefly after the show as well

That tour came to the concert hall here in Toronto. If only I'd had my ear to the ground when I was 12. So jealous.

    That is so awesome!

You can definitely tell that Mike, Jeff, Matt, and Stone were ringers from the TotD album....

I worked at the 1992 Lollapalooza at SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center in NY). I was told to take shelter during PJ's set and ran inside by the performer's gate shortly after a downpour began. I remember there were tornado warnings and the lights going out on the stage but PJ kept playing and the amps sure seemed to be working. I couldn't see a thing back there but the music was loud.

Eddie did some famous mudsliding through the lawn seats, too.

Good times, but I'm afraid I can't say I "saw" them much at that show. I was working the performer's gate as a lot attendant. What a lineup, though. Got to hear everybody, for sure! :D

    Thats my earliest PJ memory.

    OOPS... obviously, post-Ten

A college friend went to see the Peppers' tour when the Pumpkins and PJ opened for them. Asked him how the show was and he said it was ok but to "keep an eye out for this band called Pearl Jam, they sound like they have a future!"
