Cheap places to stay in NY and Philly?

Guessing NY is one of the most expensive cities to live in... but anywho...

Are there any cheap or pretty cheap places to stay in this city when I fly in for some PJ in October? Any recommendations?

And the same regarding Philly?

And anything else to think about? Guessing grayhound bus i s the cheapest way to go between the cities?

    it depends on your definition of cheap ... you live in sweden? ... nothing's cheap there ... :lol:

    i would say try airbnb.com or a hostel ... hotels are not gonna be cheap ... buses are probably the cheapest way to get to philly ... outside of trying to catch a ride from a new yorker, which I am guessing there will be plenty making the trek ...

    For bus also take a look at something called 'Bolt Bus' -- pretty cheap and easy between NYC and Philly.
    No idea on hotels in Philly or NY that are cheap./ I would look at Hotels.com, Expedia.com & Travelocity.com. Stuff is expensive!

    Not sure if there is one- you can try and see if there is a megabus from NYC to Philly, they are cheap. The train should not be expensive either.

    You can get around pretty cheap in Sweden if you now the place. Went to a film festival in Montreal two years ago, wasn't that much cheaper :)

    But with my income (zero) it would be nice to make the trip as cheap as possible, will travel on borrowed money :)

    For a cheap place to stay in NY... try New Jersey. Catch NJ Transit out to a town like Montclair or Madison. Things still won't be "cheap," but they will be less expensive and better value. Philly's not that far from NY; depending on how much money you are willing to borrow, the train might be a better option. You can get from Newark to Philly by train for $11.50. Check www.njtransit.com

    It works in conjunction with Priceline's "Name your own price" bidding option to give you advice and bid automatically for you.

    I scored a place near the Philly airport for $64 (plus tax). Free parking and free shuttle service to / from the airport. Should be pretty easy to find a cab ride to the stadium.

    Did I miss something? I put in Newark Penn Station - Philly 30th, got a one-way adult fare of $11.50.

    If you're staying closer to NY, I would suggest the Secaucus, NJ area. It's easy to get to the city by train or bus.

    You can usually find something in that area that's both reasonable and very convenient to NYC. Unless you want to stay in some sort of hostel or other alternative accommodation, I'd avoid staying in NYC proper. Too expensive.

    To get to Brooklyn, all you have to do is get anywhere in Manhattan like NY Penn Station or 14th St, and pretty much all Brooklyn-bound subways will get you there.

    To get to Philly, I agree that Bolt Bus, or the train from Newark Penn Station, would be good options.

    My daughter uses Megabus frequently from Albany to NYC (you can get it under $10 if you book early, and I'm pretty sure they have NYC to Philly). One thing to keep in mind with buses as opposed to trains/subways, is they get hung up in the same traffic as all the drivers. She says add 2 hours to the trip if you're on the bus going in via the Lincoln tunnel at rush hour.

    Thanks for your responses!

    Will focus on try to find a cheap hostel, but I don't know if I want to stay in a doorm for such a long visit.

    May go for something private for NY, and a cheap dorm for the nights in Philly.

    If you want to take the train between NYC and Philly, where should you look? Do you have one traincompany like here in Sweden or several "private" ones?
