So the next day after the Wrigley show my wife, daughter and I take one of the boat architectural tours and end up sitting next to three couples that went to the show as well. Half way through our discussion one of the couples leans over to us and ask us when Pearl Jam went back on stage as they pulled the plug and left around 11:30pm. You could tell they were both bummed about leaving 15 minutes before the boys went back on stage that they moved seats on the boat so they wouldn't have to hear us rant about how awesome the rest of the show was, LOL! And they even traveled to the show from Toronto. Who spends all that money on travel and leaves the show before anyone officially calls it off??

Then on the plane ride home this evening a lady looks over my shoulder and notices I'm on the PJ message board and ask me if I went to the show and stayed through the lightning delay. Of course I tell her proudly and mention that even my 6 1/2 yr old made it to 1am. Of course she then proceeds to tell me that she and her husband pulled the plug because they were wet and tired and she had seen them 30 times before and didn't want to wait around any longer. Again, someone else who traveled and spent money to specifically go to this show and they gave up because of some rain?

I ask, what type of fans are these???? I don't know about the rest of you but I told my wife that they would have to come on the loud speaker and tell me to take my ass home otherwise I was staying till Ed and the boys came back on stage!!

I don't know if you can call someone out for being judgmental, then have your next sentence be equally judgmental...I'll have to dig through the rulebook on that one.

Yes, you're right and I thought about before I posted it. But as a parent? As a parent, dragging a six year old to a late night concert like Wrigley is a no brainer. It 's not the place.

To the OP I know this maybe a shot in the dark but did you spark a doobie halfway through the set when your family left?

I see what you did there, backseatLover12. Clever.

Just curious to know if it's the same dad and 6 1/2-ish-looking kid we saw sitting amid all the same cigarette smoke clouds that eventually played into mine and my wife's decision to leave early. Generally speaking, I really dug the 17-song set we heard (it was my 16th show. Based on the sound quality and 'on-ness' of the band, it ranks in the bottom six of my personal PJ experiences, but would have worked its way into the top half had I been able to stay for a mostly stellar setlist).

... I have a love-hate feeling with my Wrigley experience and unfairly spouted off the cuff too soon on another thread here with my disappointment in the handling of the delay, but one thing I won't do is trash other fans for their decision to leave after a ridiculous and poorly handled delay. Plenty of folks left between 11-11:30 convinced the show was gonna be canceled/postponed. As it was, I know of people who wound up having to walk for up to 3 hours back to their hotels and friend's places because of delayed train service and severe shortage of taxi service. We can only imagine what the backlash would have been if Eddie had happened to grow up on the South Side and the show had been continued at U.S. Cellular Field instead. The legend of the band is that "no other band would have played on like that," and no doubt the band knew its fanbase in general was as dedicated. The decision was seen as foolhardy by a good many who found bathrooms with no toilet paper, no more water available to dehydrated/drunk fans during the delay, and piss-poor field management that led to tons of un-wristbanded fans sneaking into GA. And make no mistake, the band also is acutely aware of its alienation of a huge portion of its fanbase with the Ticketmaster fiasco (rightly or unrightly so), and I would bet anyone any amount of money the band had its PR interests at heart in ensuring it could come back out and play 3 hours past the noise ordinance curfew with an impending album, in spite of what Eddie or other members say about whether or not they care that the media covers them.

I stayed till the end but understood those that left. For many of us the trip was just as much about seeing Chicago, Wrigley, other fan clubs, etc...

One of my thoughts was of a potential riot if the band did not come back. If I had kids with me, that would be at the top of my concern list.

At around 11:30 it looked like they were telling the merch tent on the floor to pack up. I think a lot of people saw this as let's get out of here before the shit storm hits. I'm sure that's why a few left at 11:30. Plus at the time who really thought we still had two hours of music left? Then there are those that might of had a long drive back home. In other words, there are plenty of good reasons people left.

    Luckily for me, I stayed.

Just because people left doesn't mean they are a lesser fan than anyone else. Who knows the reasoning? Perhaps being in the heat all day, waiting in line, traveling to the show on train, etc...I do know that any kind of communication from the Wrigley staff regarding whether or not the show would continue would have been welcome..even if it was "just hang in there, guys. We are still deciding"....I'll bet that would have kept more folks in the stadium.

the city has taxis after 1am??

    i'd like to disagree

although walking north halstead after the show from wrigley down to the train station by the vic was an experience i definitely will never forget

Pearl Jam fan belittles other fan for leaving a show during two hour rain delay when MANY people believed not another song would be played.

But before doing so he claims he brought a 6 year old to a rock and roll concert, in horrible hot humid weather, with a risk of severe storms... and kept him there to 1 a.m. in the morning.

Yes, some fans are just unbelievable.

So my wife and I stayed till 1:15, our day started at 5:00 AM for our 6 hr drive, plus I knew what was going to be like to get on the train for our ride back to the hotel. I am a huge fan, and I know I missed a few great moments. Put I finally had to give in. Plus I feel the heat played a role in a lot of peoples decision to leave, we had been in the heat since 2:00 PM. There is no reason to look down on us 10C that had to through the towel in. There will be many more shows and epic moments. I feel New Orleans may be one of those nights. Don't hate just appreciate.

I don't know what kind of fans they are, but I don't think this is a fandom issue, but a broader one. For example, I hate hot weather, sometimes I can't stand it, but I don't bitch about the weather, as many do whether it is hot or cold. What I mean is that weather won't ruin my plans, any plan, no matter how hot it is, or if it's pouring down. So those who couldn't stand the wait because they were wet, come on, did it rained that hard? isn't it summer over there? I bet this is the kind of people who don't go to the movies or decline an invitation or fail to attend a party because of the weather. What a bunch of douchebags, who takes such a decision without hearing the official announcement?

  • I really thought as the show was going on "no one will bitch about this - they stuck out the delay and played so many rare songs" - but the thought that no one would bitch just shows how intoxicating a live PJ show is for me. I wasn't thinking logical thoughts.

Any PJ tattoos on the 6 year old?
  • unless you know everything the have going on in their lives, maybe you should just mind your own business. Maybe the wife is pregnant. Maybe one of them has a bad back and can't stand for 8 hours straight. maybe there was a death in the family, and instead of having a hotel to go back to, they now have to drive all tonight to attend the funeral the next morning

I'm not judging them, I'm more astounded by them actually. I'm astounded because what hardcore fan would spend all that money to travel to the show and then leave before anything official was announced?

And who dragged their 6 year old to a show? I know it wasn't me as the option to go was completely up to her and she wanted to go. Trust me, I would never drag her anywhere especially to a concert as I could of easily enjoyed going by myself if I had to.

And please remember it's also summer break for kids and we were on a mini vacation so her staying up till 1am one time over the vacation wasn't going to kill her. You gotta live a life a little ya know!? :corn:

Oh boy, please. I took my daughter to see Pearl Jam at Wrigley Field...not Marilyn Manson! We had reserved seats, the people around us were cool as hell and at no point was her safety ever in jeopardy. Step out of your middle America way of thinking, lighten up and enjoy life once in a while...you might actually like it! :D
