BOSS DS1 signal issue

Hey everyone! I've got two of these (though both are missing---be wary when lending pedals to friends!) and I love(d) them. My buddy also has one but he's having some trouble with it. When the pedal is hooked in the chain and OFF the signal is fine. However, when it is turned out, there's no signal. The computer board looks new and there's no interference when wiggling either the input our output cords/jacks. He replaced the switch but still has the problem. Any ideas?
