Mike's take on "Obamacare"

I too have a pre-existing condition. I too have been denied healthcare because of it, even after speaking with a wonderful woman, a healthcare advocate that I found through the Pearl Jam website and mentioned by Mike. She was great! Seemed to really care about my plight, but could do nothing for me besides giving me yet more #'s to call. I had no energy left to do so. That was a while back. I did finally get coverage through the most expensive company to the tune of $770.00 a month. Since then I had to drop it (WAY too expensive-hmmm...a roof over my head or healthcare..?). Since then, with Obamacare looming in the future, that same company has gone up 20% at one time, then 40% a few months later. Yes Mike, the concept works- healthcare for everyone. Realistically, it won't work. My husband and I and many of our friends who don't have jobs that offer healthcare await the day that we're told we have to get it or go to prison, wait for the only financial option we have- the latter. In the meantime, before it really comes into full effect, I ponder... will they make me go to maximum security prison? For women in CT, that is the only prison we have. All this does is give the government more ways to tell us what to do and how to do it. Please Mike, I love you man, but take off those rose-colored glasses. This Is too good to be true! :fp:

And that is what is wrong with it. What if you can't afford it anyway?

If you think you will go to prison if you cannot afford or choose not to buy healthcare, then I don't know what to tell you. Clearly you are buying into scare tactics by the right.

You can spend your time alone, redigesting past regrets, oh
or you can come to terms and realize
you're the only one who can't forgive yourself, oh
makes much more sense to live in the present tense

  • In my opinion, the benefits are extremely good, so the money is sort of worth it, but it should not be called the Affordable Care Act. It is still way too expensive.

Any numbers I'm seeing are much lower than individual plans currently, especially if you and your spouse are unemployed. The Affordable Care Act is also expanding Medicaid, which you may qualify for, which would be very minimal cost. Not sure why you think you'd go to prison, kinda says you might want to look into some more.

Im not sure i follow what you mean about numbers, but the $770.00 that i was paying for just me was over 6 years ago, and the rates from the only company I've found that will cover me with my pre-existing condition have gone up 60%. We're not unemployed, but my husband is self-employed and I don't have a job that offers healthcare. Sure the threat of jail is extreme, maybe its just bs, but isn't the fact that our government sends this sort of idle threat to us for not obeying them frightening to anybody else?

In Connecticut it looks like enrollment starts 10/1/13. Here's the link:

I think the consequence for not enrolling is a fine, which will be a percentage of your income, if I remember right.
