How did the concert poster become so popular?

I know a LOT of people here are borderline obbsessed with the concert posters, and I got to thinking, how did they become so popular? I know it's cool to bring something home with you, but I'm not into the posters. The one's I like are the tour posters, such as the Avocado or the Big Wave. So, not meaning to offend anyone, but, how did they become so popular to reach prices such as $500 on Ebay?

The popularity is a direct reflection of the insanity of the fans and their never ending desire to spend their first and last dollar on anything and everything Pearl Jam.

I agree that the amount spent on posters is ridiculous, but it is nice to take something that symbolizes the concert that you specifically were at. Although I only have one (eventhough I've had the oppurtunity for more), and wouldn't go nuts if I didn't get it.

Also, some of them just happen to be fucking cool.

I only want the posters to the shows I attend. Why would fans want posters to shows they weren't at.

Because some are highly collectible. Remember, only a few hundred of any given poster are screenprinted by hand and then they're gone. Plus, if I went to a show where the poster was fugly, I would probably get a poster from another show on the tour to enjoy.
East Rutherford 2 and Cleveland come to mind.
Still, my favorite remains from the 93 show attended at The Gorge:

my fav is Uniondale 2003 that is a pretty cool design. Melbourne 2003 is also a very good one with a 'super hero' theme to it.

I learned the importance of posters a few years ago....i.e. which ones are rare must haves and the art detail. I definitely buy the posters of the shows I go to, but I've also invested in others. I wouldn't say I'm "obsessed", but I've been known to get a little crazy on ebay over certain posters. I'm proud of what I've obtained thus far. For me, they're a fun thing to collect that doesn't take up much space. Looking forward to adding more. :)
We’ll meet again, but not yet…not yet.
