Anyone else think this is fucking ridiculous?

$4 Million for a punch in the face? If he'd amputated both of his legs then maybe he'd have a case, but $4 million for a rattled jaw? Please tell me this shit isn't normal in the U.S?

Former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen sued for $4m over fight

Lawsuit filed in LA superior court says Nobu autograph hunter was victim of a 'brutal and unjustified physical attack'

The former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen is being sued over a fight last month at a Southern California restaurant that left an autograph-seeker hospitalized with a head injury.

The $4m lawsuit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles superior court, says the 49-year-old plaintiff, Camran Shafighi, simply asked Pippen for a photograph for his girlfriend's 12-year-old son. Instead, the suit says, Shafighi was subjected to a "brutal and unjustified physical attack" that included spit in the face, a shove and a punch that sent Shafighi to the ground.

"At no time did or could Mr Shafighi physically provoke or fight back, as he was knocked unconscious with the first blow," the lawsuit says.

Sheriff's officials, who were still investigating the incident, said Pippen voluntarily came into a station to be questioned and was cooperative. He was not arrested and no charges have been filed. Investigators at the time said Pippen had been dining on 23 June with his family at Nobu, a restaurant on the beach in Malibu frequented by celebrities. Shafighi was taking pictures of Pippen inside the restaurant then outside in the parking lot, investigators said.

A sheriff's spokesman, Steve Whitmore, said several witnesses described Shafighi as intoxicated. An argument ensued that led to violence, investigators said. Shafighi was taken to a hospital with a head injury, treated and released...

if he was such a big fan he would've known that Pippen is a jerk to fans. I guarantee the waitress at the restaurant didn't get a tip from "No Tippin" Pippen (google that nickname. it's famous among all Chicago restaurants)

the other side of the story is that he spit on Pippen and called him the N word. who knows.

Life's just not fair. A woman gets a million bucks for spilling hot coffee on her crotch. Some autograph seeker may get 4 mil for a punch in the face. What did I get for slipping on a wet KFC floor a year and a half ago? A concussion and a doctors bill because the only witness was my wife. Next time, I'm getting slugged by a famous athlete.

And that is not only unfair, but fucked up. These over-the-top gonna-get-me-a-bonanza lawsuits take away from those that are legitimate, those who deserve to be fairly recompensed for their bills, their pain, etc.

Also, I say this about Pippen or anyone else in the public eye - they have the right to eat a meal in peace, to take a stroll with their family, to simply be left the fuck alone.

i never heard the word/term "sued" or "getting sued" or "i don't wanna be sued" until i moved to western washington. this is a fact. we love fist fights here in iowa. 99.7% of all iowans would invite scott pippen to a slug out & not give two shits about a little blood.

i once just got home from a 3 week truck driving event. i was visiting my new neighbors & was exhausted. i said "im going home im tired" & i swayed around a bit on my feet. they begged me not to fall down on their property as they were affraid i would sue them. they were serious as all get out.

Yeah it's a pretty big underground thing amongst certain sections of the community, it's how fueds are settled and at times how they begin.

On a side note, it's a myth that one punch can't be a big deal. This autograph dude sounds like a dick (and liar - I'm dubious that a 12 year old knows who Pippen was/is), but punches can cause a lot of damage, especially when the recipient isn't expecting it. $4 million damage? Probably not here, but I wouldn't write off the danger that comes when people start throwing their fists around.

It is not unheard of for "only one punch" to result in serious injuries or death. Happens way more than you think and it results from too many people playing tough guy. Kill a guy with "only one punch" and you'll find yourself doing prison time.

Sorry- I wasn't passing judgement on the women with the burns. I am pointing out that there is no equity in these kinds of cases. When I fell and literally bounced my head off the hard floor I received partial compensation for my medical bills only. And all I asked for was to have all of the medical covered and compensation for loss of time at work for a few weeks. That's all I asked for- not a million damn dollars. Or four. I basically got squat.

Right on what you said about Pippen. In Keith Richards book Life he talks about being in a bar and some guy keeps bugging him so all of the sudden Richards grabs the guy, puts him down on the floor, whips out a knife and yells at him to leave him the fuck alone!
