got bombed last night at MSG and had a blast!!! thought i would stay sober for tonight's show, and i've got some good reasons:

a) as a contrast to last nights show

b) i'll save a ton of money (spent 30 bucks on the 4 beers i bought in the garden)

c) might run into someone who i don't want to be drunk in front of

d) have to be up tomorrow morning for work (didn't have to worry about that last night)

anybody else staying straight tonite?

    e) getting bombed at PJ shows is stupid.

I had a couple of beers before the show, one during Ted Leo, and then made sure I pissed it all out between sets. Don't want to miss anything.

On a related side note, the two seats next to me were vacant when PJ took the stage. I thought it odd, but cool, because I was gonna have a little bit of extra room to move.

About three songs in, the seats rightful owners show up -- late -- each holding two beers. Here's the weird part: They both seemed totally into the show, singing along to everything, even the obscure stuff. But they were hardly ever there.

Halfway through the main set, they disappeared, then returned during the encore with two beers apiece again, and seemed really into the show again. A few songs later, they disappeared again.

They didn't bother me. They weren't *those* kind of drunks, but it did occur to me to wonder why they bothered to come at all.

To me, getting blitzed before a PJ show is like getting blitzed before a really good meal: You don't get to savor what you're tasting/hearing.

  • can't say the same. its definetly different though. my logic is that i was at 12 shows before i was 21, and this will be my 12th show since i have been 21. So like eddie said we got some catching up to do.

    enjoy though

ive found a good balance of drinking at PJ shows. Ill have some before the show... have some during the opening act, pee it out as someone above stated... and then enjoy the show without having to get out of my seat.
I used to get drunk at shows (of all sorts), and I would have the worst guilt the following day.

I enjoy it so much more sober. Like someone else said, just one or two before so no pee breaks, then party afterwards! :)

I usually cut myself off at two beers pre-show, maybe I'll get one more after the opening act. I just don't think being drunk enhances my enjoyment of the show, it just makes it go by faster.

Marijuana, on the other hand... is illegal, so I would never, ever smoke any.
*Does not include encore of Garden and Leash.

the main thing for me is i hate having to keep leaving to take a leak....but last night the men's room was right near my seats, so even if i ran out during a song like Down or Present Tense (which i can do without) i didn't miss much and could still hear from the bathroom

somethimes i think it sucks to go to a show and get intoxicated and not remember much....but it is all about the moment - when you are there drunk, you are having a whole lot of fun in the moment, so what if you can't remember the whole setlist the next day??

also, i've been to shows sober and had a hard time remembering what was played the next day!!

  • I agree - it seems like if I drink enough that I have to leave for the bathroom, that's always when they play the song I've been hoping for...

A light buzz is enjoyable, but as I_Got_Shit said, drinking too much makes the show breeze by for me (which is not a good thing).

It's odd - it's like if I drink too much I may have more fun, but it seems like that fun is shorter lived than if I was sober.
  • Now if Ed will just try to stay sober tonight maybe they'll play a good set

If you need the booze (or dope) to enjoy the show....you ain't there for the music.

I don't think anyone said they needed it to enjoy the show - sometimes when you get together and tailgate with people you haven't seen since the last show, things just get a little crazy... no harm.

I have ONE, at most, during the opening band. The last thing I want during a PJ show is an altered state of consciousness (induced by substances, that is ... If the music does it, well, that's the point!).

well then i guess Eddie Vedder with his red wine isn't there for the music

let's hear your clever reply to that
