A new sound

Insights came at unexpected moments. Sometimes it might happen while she was doing some task that required only half her attention, like the inevitable dishes, laundry folding, or food preparation. Those dull, unrelenting, repetitious chores that were the treadmill of a mother's life. Sometimes she tried to make them more interesting by learning new songs and visualizing the characters in them. She always had a stack of whatever music she was focused on next to the small stereo her husband had put in the kitchen for her. He said it slowed her down. He didn't realize that she needed the sound to make the jobs bearable. The boredom could be that bad. And, the loneliness of being downstairs alone too. (All the boys were upstairs doing their projects.)

These insights were probably obvious to others, but being related to other people's motives or intentions, she had to work them out gradually. For an intelligent woman, obvious motives weren't obvious to her, while patterns that mystified others were quite visible. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, don't we?!

Anyway, it could have been the words in some song that sent her mind down a new path. Whatever it was, it suddenly became clear to her that sometimes people can go all around a subject because they didn't want to get there directly. Take a long way around because they were afraid to come out with the core of their desires. She realized that she was often oblivious when people did this, and yet she could sometimes behave this way.

It occurred to her, that it could be a comical case of miscommunication and missed opportunities if two such people were trying to connect. They could miss cues and doors and flowers all the time! Like blind-folded people stumbling around a small room without realizing they aren't alone. It was a sad realization.

She was self-aware enough to know that sometimes it was too late to repair her mistakes. Whatever clumsy errors she'd made would have to stand out on her personal lawn like the bronze statues in a small town. Arms up, on a horse, with a carved plaque!
