(CNN) -- Critics who have compared President Barack Obama's stance on government surveillance to that of hawkish former Vice President Dick Cheney are missing his insistence on proper systematic balances, Obama said in an interview that aired Monday.

Defending at length the recently revealed government programs that gather information about phone calls and Internet usage, Obama said his focus has always been on allowing information to be gathered while ensuring necessary oversight.

"Some people say, 'Well, you know, Obama was this raving liberal before. Now he's, you know, Dick Cheney.'" Obama told PBS' Charlie Rose. "Dick Cheney sometimes says, 'Yeah, you know? He took it all lock, stock, and barrel.' My concern has always been not that we shouldn't do intelligence gathering to prevent terrorism, but rather are we setting up a system of checks and balances?"

well we all make mistakes.....are the obama voters happy with their victory ?
I'm all for intelligence gathering to prevent terrorism but how can we trust a man that has abused his power as president (appointing positions just because he's president, IRS attack team etc.) and now he's wants to send weapons to syria ......“What is the plan? Where are we going in Syria? And what do you want to accomplish?” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers asked Sunday.

what would you say if every form of intelligence gathering was stopped and we got hit with another 9/11??

would it be something like "awww shucks....we could have prevented this, but the government failed us by stopping gathering intelligence...oh well at least i have my freedom....shrug..."

no, you would be pissed that "nobama" did nothing to prevent it.

i swear, you republicans keep putting obama in situations where he can not win with you. he is damned no matter what he does.

I do not believe he has abused his power as president...at least no more so than any other president in recent history. I am 37 and can think of worse examples of abuse of power that have occurred just in my lifetime.

has he really abused his power? if so, how?

and if he has, does that make him a criminal? if he is a criminal then let's draw up the articles of impeachment.

If you really believe what you say... This means you are an Obama supporter. Here's why:
You say the change that was promised, never occurred.
This means, nothing has changed and we are still operating under the Bush rules.
You liked life under the Bush rules, because you don't like Bush being blamed for what happened on his watch.
You supported Bush Rules... Obama is in charge... nothing has changed... Bush rules still enforced by obama... You like Bush... therefore, you support Obama and his enforcement on the Bush rules.

Cosmo; that's not at all what I've said, obama's change started right out of the gate with obama bucks and now it's obamacare which I half way agree with and his spread the wealth idea needs some work also.
so anyway no I don't support obama and his change and if you guy's can't see the abuse and mistakes he's made maybe you should watch FOX NEWS more often  ..heck it seems even CNN is pointing out his short comings lately, the guy is a disaster and Ithink even most people on here see that but refuse to admit it because of their pride.

Well, things havent been pretty with Obama, but I don't label things "disaster" material until they've blown up an entire country and waisted bizillionjillions of dollars on false reports -- That's disaster material.

Sir, The things I see as disaterous to our nation are things such as sending 200,000 troops to a country... just because we really don't like that country, especially, their leader. I find it pretty tough to equate providing access to health care services for the weakest of our citizens to that.
    But, that's just me.

i'm sorry, but i think that in the face of constant opposition by senate and house republicans who hate HIM more than they love this country, i think he has done an admirable job.

instead of gathering on innocent American citizens AND those who are doing nothing wrong and playing by the rules,

How about the US undergo a significant shift in foreign policy, hold fast for several generations and wait for the change to occur in those who wish to retaliate for US Arrogance and wrong doing in the rest of the world?

Then, maybe... a solution is for our Congress to work towards fixing what is in place, rather than wasting our tax dollars trying to repeal a law that the Supreme Court has already ruled on.
    ...
And with this NSA Data Gathering... I think that we agree, there are merits to its usage is it results in thwarting murderous attacks on our citizen. But, we also must remember that the Constitution is in place for a reason... that is to protect us from our own Government.
It is a very complicated issue and cannot be solved by listening to and agreeing with a pundit on the radio or television.
