One day she noticed that he had somehow become like a smooth piece of sea glass rather than the sharp, reflective crystal he'd been before. She reminisced about how he was years earlier. He'd been unusual like a shaft of light cutting through a dusty room. Making the invisible suddenly visible to others. She let out a loud breath and opened her eyes wide at the memory.

Now he sometimes seemed worn down and polished, as if from too much tumbling contact with a bunch of rocks. It was maddening to her that he'd let the dimwits do this to him! So often, exceptional people are covered up, cleaned up, sanded down, all because average people don't want to feel uncomfortable. They don't want to be reminded that there are people who can do more.

She wished she could tell him not to let them do that to him! Didn't he remember how it felt when he didn't care whether people were comfortable with his ideas or not?! Didn't he remember how he liked to jump tall buildings and run at light speed?! She loved him to be the most he could be rather than just some safe shadow of himself.
