Gas where I live is $4.29 right now. Fuckin ridiculous.

I'm not a gas expert, so who determines gas prices? (I already know its not the President, lol)

    love it.

    force people to conserve.
  • Gas prices, though set regionally based on the type of formulation (certain climates require different formulations) and set further locally based on supply and demand \ cost of living (gas costs more in expensive parts of town, generally) ... above and beyond all those variables ... the price of gas tends to track the spot price of a barrel of crude oil.

You can see a general sense of how gas tracks oil on this graph ...

if you are asking how the price of a barrel of oil is determined ... haha ... well ... in the very near term it is set by supply constraints ... so that is to say it will go up abruptly if some major oil producing country or company has an "issue" ... otherwise in the medium term (a month to a few months) the price of oil more or less fluctuates based on chart patterns and ranges. In other words, the current range has been from about $80 to $110 a barrel. So oil will bounce its way around from the low end to the high end. When it tops out, it will bounce it's way back down.

You can see that fairly easily by looking the last two years trading in this NYMEX chart. It's been range trading since the finance crash of 08.

I can't say I love it but I do agree it's mostly good. We use too much gas and pay too little for this non-renewable resource. My European friends laugh (or sneer) when they hear Americans complain about gas prices. They've been paying far more for a long time. We burn it up fast because it's cheap which both depletes the resource more quickly and is a major contributor to climate change. Now if only more of the money for those raised prices were going into developing clean alternatives it would all be good.

Some states have a law that Gas has to be sold for no less than a certain mark up. Like in WI it is 9% I believe. So no gas retailer can sell a gallon at less than 9% mark up. I find that to be very interesting. I don't believe any other industry has the same rules.

It's nice to hear all the reports how the US is on the verge of becoming the biggest oil extractor in the world.

And then see gas for $4 a gallon today.

The upside of the high gas prices is that people drive less, in particular the younger generation is driving less. If this continues, cities that want to be livable will have to re-prioritize how they spend transportation dollars and develop alternative modes. All the past car centric build up has contributed to American's addiction to cars. How many time do you hear someone say "I have to have a car"? With gas staying high, hopefully we hear this less and less.

I can't believe how young people are not excited about driving or getting a car. I think the social network has replaced that sense of freedom that a car represented a decade ago.

Or they could just be a bunch of pansies.
