I haven't read that much about it but it seems a gross over-reaction of the police. Some peaceful protest in Taksim Square & next thing tear gas?!? WTF!??!?!

Do you know about the fire down by the Bosphorus near Besiktas as well? Is that related? There's a wee distance between Taksim & Basiktas so I'm not sure if or ow they're related. A friend posted a pci of the fire in Besiktas on my wall in Facebook but I've not been able to find anything out about it.

Morello, my understanding of geography is put to shame! Excuse me while I go search Google or dig out my atlas and get a little further educated! :)

^^ Oh don't worry about that brianlux, I can do that myself. I lived in Turkey for a year a long time ago & spent as much of that year as possible in Istanbul(4 months'ish I think it was) so, not to be rude but, I probably still have more of an idea than your looking at Google can give. I thought maybe SOLAT319, or someone else around here might know Istanbul, or even be there & know what's hapnin.

You lived there! Fascinating! Must have been quite an experience.

I hope I get some news from my sister soon although she may have left Istanbul already. She told me it would be difficult to send email from the area but if I get any news from her I'll post it here.

They are all related. The peaceful sit-in about the demolution of the only green space in Central Istanbul in order to build a shopping mall was stopped by extreme police force. Cops raided people's tents in the middle of the night and set them on fire then proceeded to release tear gas and pressured water on them.
This was the last straw really because current government and PM have been manipulating people by the use of religion. So after the initial police brutality towards peaceful protesters at Gezi Park, Uprising started spreading like a wildfire all over the country. Major media outlets are staying silent. My friends here in US didn't even know this was going on since last Wednesday when they saw information on my newsfeed. But by now pretty much the entire world found out through power of social media. Anonymus also helped.
People died today in Istanbul....innocent people. My heart is broken to million pieces :(

I posted a link on Pearl Jam Activism Facebook page which was a summary of what is happening in Turkiye. I can't see that post anymore on their page. I really hope it was not removed on purpose. That probably would be the biggest let down by my favorite band...

The bridge in that photo on that website? That's Bosphorus Bridge. One particular thing to note is that bridge is closed to pedestrians. But look at it now...

^^ Yep, I saw footage of that on the news here tonight. I've only heard a little bit about the politicians In Turkiye atm but my 1st impression was not a good one hearing they are militant & traditional leaning. I'm trying to think of an appropriate quote from Ataturk but my memory is failing me.:cry:

Great that the people are standig up to a govt they don't like but terrible the heavy handed tactics that are being used to stamp them down.

When I lived in Istanbul I spent a lot of time at & around Taksim square so it's crazy stuff reading this!!

This is begenning of the end of dictatorial power. Everyone all over the world must support this reaction.

    Insallah! I hope so!!

A friend of mine in Istanbul has just posted this on Facebook:
"Please share ! This morning hundreds of police and water cannon vehicles marched into Taksim. There has been a peaceful environment for 10 days there. This morning at 7:30 people were still sleeping in their tents or having breakfast. When the police attacked with gas bombs a group of about 30 provocators who are NOT among us, NOT activists, NOT among the people who resist started attacking the police with molotov cocktails. Curiously enough the Toma s (water cannon vehicles) that are able to push away and separate hundreds of people within seconds (as we have seen many times in the two weeks) could not get rid of this group of provocators for over an hour now. Why? This is all a planned game to be played in front of the international media. The resisting people are still peaceful, they do not throw stones or molotov cocktails!!! This is a set up!"
