    "grammer" :mrgreen:

I think people have become lazier and more complacent in many ways - maybe that leads to a drop in IQ? Less using the noggin. I mean, look how much is done for us now - research, parallel parking, machinery/appliances - just off the top of my head.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to take from the article, since it also says "Other research has suggested an apparent rise in I.Q. scores since the 1940s..."

    Damned research!

Lazy and more dependent on technology for sure. More entitled, probably so. Dunno about dumber.

I was discussing this with my wife just yesterday. She mentioned something called google glasses, or something? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Glass

Maybe we've got too much at our fingertips, and that will allow some of us to stop exercising parts of our brains??
Now im off to do some old school times tables and long division. dont wanna get rusty.

That's what I'm thinking to. Less of needing to actually think on the whole.

And the only place I've heard of the word "dumberer" is the urban dictionary, grammAr boy. ;)

No. We just hear about dumb people more often and get to read what they have to say thanks to the intertubes.

I would tend to agree with this. One downside to the internet is the fact that we are inundated with bleak stories reflecting stupidity and malice (among several other things). As a result, it's hard to maintain that level of optimism that was likely prevalent in our parents' generation.

Our innocence does not remain intact for very long. For some reason, I think this is damaging to some degree and as such, I feel for our kids growing up in this era. Exposed to the bizarre aspects of society and sometimes exposed to ruthless peer cyber bullying... it's got to be hard growing up and wondering what a normal world should look like without proper mentorship.

No. Just as if he'd said 'People are getting wiser'. It would be a mistake to think he should have said 'People are getting wiserer'. If the noun contained three syllables or more, then you'd add the prefix 'more', as in 'more intelligent'.

It used to be that the masses only heard the voices of the most intelligent people - through books, journalism and 3 TV stations.

Now - any idiot can have a blog, youtube channel, twitter account, etc. Plus there are a gazillion TV channels competing for ratings which forces them out to the fringes to discover "news"

I think there's a perception that we're dumber because more of the dumb people are being heard from.

Well, I think it is pretty telling that we have made giant advances in engineering, medicine, etc over the last few decades, but art, literature, etc has all suffered, at least in my opinion. We have very good mimicry in those areas, but very little innovation. Just seems like we don't have the same priorities that scholars had back then.

It is a very good point that more people have a voice now. I mean, you don't see too many people writing novels, essays and the like without the ability to read, which most didn't have back then.

as to all the blogs and twitters and facebook shit... I find it telling and rather funny that just about no one thinks they are the dumb one

Any idiot can also have their own reality television show, write movies in Hollywood (very few movies in the last 2 decades have been intelligent), write advertising since most of all advertising is dumbing down society on the whole, graduating from high school since the education system is failing our kids, write popular books and articles since the web is full of unintelligent ramblings, and so on.

As a hobby I'm into sociology and human behavior in general. The dummies really are reflected to be more of the norm and are more ubiquitous than ever before, whether we really are getting dumber or the dumb are just more in view and are in the jobs intelligent people are supposed to be in because they "know someone". They're everywhere.

i'm not sure if dumber is the term I would use ... i think people have lost the ability to think critically ... and that has resulted in people being easily manipulated and indoctrinated ... it's been purposeful and the results prove it ...
