Ive seen this floating around facebook. There's a lot of support for this girl, but she did still break the law I guess. What do you all think?

Florida high schooler expelled, arrested for same-sex relationship

A young Florida woman was expelled and then arrested after continuing a same-sex relationship with another girl from her high school.

Kaitlyn Hunt is an 18-year-old senior from Indian River County, Fla. She is facing felony charges for being involved in a sexual relationship with another girl at her school.

The romance began when Hunt was 17 and the other girl involved was 14.

When Hunt’s girlfriend’s parents found out about the relationship, they went to the police to report it and press charges.

Hunt was arrested and charged with two counts of felony lewd and lascivious batter on a child 12-16.

According to Florida law, the age of consent is 18. Hunt’s mother believes the situation has little to do with that and is more so about homophobia.

“They are out to destroy my daughter, because they feel like she ‘made’ their daughter gay. They see being gay as wrong and they blame my daughter. Of course, I see it 100% differently. I don’t see or label these girls as gay. They are teenagers in high school experimenting with their sexuality – with mutual consent. And even if their daughter is gay, who cares? She is still their daughter.”

Hunt’s school, Sebastian River High School, where she was voted Student with the Most School Spirit, has also taken action against her. She was kicked off the school’s basketball team by the coach in order to avoid “drama.” In addition, following pressure from Hunt’s girlfriend’s parents, the school board voted to expel Hunt.

Hunt’s little sister, who also goes to the school, has seen comments such as “rapist,” “child abuser” and “criminal” written about Hunt on the bathroom walls.

Hunt is now faced with two options. She can accept Assistant State Attorney Brian Workman’s plea deal, which would require her to admit to a felony, spend two years under house arrest and possibly end up on the sex offender registry for life; or go to trial. She has until the end of the week to decide.

In the meantime, Hunt’s family launched a petition to “Stop the hate. Free Kate.” As of Monday afternoon, the petition had 59,000 supporters.

This is what happens when you stick a bunch of kids age 14 -19 in the same proximity for nine months out of the year. The physical act of love. Coitus.

I had a friend that almost got in the same trouble cause he was 17 and doinked a 15 year old and her parents found out.

Either change the laws or build two separate buildings.

It has to come down to the law, regardless of whether it was same-sex or not. Either apply it to all, or to none.

(just me, or is the headline misleading?)

I wonder if it was a 17 year old boy dating the 14 yr old, would the parents have the same reaction. If they did, would there still have been an arrest made?

Statutory rape is illegal, even for gay and lesbians.

I thought it was misleading as well. The older girl was charged with lewd behavior with a minor. This happens to straight folk quite often as well.

someone on the palm beach post said this:
"Kate was dating this 14 year old for TWO ((2)) years, the parents WAITED till she turned 18 to press charges. If the parents had a problem with the relationship why wait till the girl was 18 to "break them up" ?????? Seems very conniving of the parents."

does that mean she started dating the girl when the girl was 12? that would be a little outrageous.

sad situation though because the age of consent laws really weren't made for high schoolers diddling each other.

::shrug::: It's not like she was going to get pregnant
  • I don't know all the details and neither do anyone else on this forum, but from the eyes of the law, I'm pretty sure these charges stem from the age difference. This case should not be spun towards gay rights. Are people positive the parents wouldn't be equally upset if some 18 year old boy was having sex with their 14 year old daughter?

A 17 year old is more ready for a sexual relationship than a 14 year old is (the age of both when the relationship started). If I was the parent of a 14 year old and they were having sex with an 18 year old... I would be very concerned and very parental.
