I hated them in Tuscany, Morocco and Turkey  No fun sitting in an old public transport in hot weather with lots of puking natives as travel companions and a plastic replacement window on your side looking down steepest slopes and discovering car wrecks down there.

Got plenty of those in my neck of the woods... Fun stuff. Once got in a high-speed chase with some cops on the road following the snaking payette river. They radioed ahead and more cops set up a roadblock for me in the next county...

you need a CDL, a 80,000 (or more) pound vehicle & the winter months . that is mountain driving.

scariest mountain driving i've ever been on is in two place. hwy 14 along the columbia river on the washington side. they have a very tiny bridge very high on the side of this mountain. the corners are where a blind trucker takes up every bit of the road. a mountain goat crew built this highway good thing is it is under 2-3 hrs long... well where i needed to go anyway.

nothing in the lower 48 compares to alaska's mountains

drove a dump truck in the mountains of western washington as I was hired to build logging roads. im not into knocking over forests so that didn't work out but one day.

used to drive up to Forks, Wa to pick up a load of lumber with a set of doubles. hwy 101 up there has some nice ass corners. 105,000 pounds of truck & lumber. elk & fog. elk & fog. cliffs & ferns, cliffs & ferns. big trees big trees.

    gravity hill, pennsylvania

put it in neutral, and go up the hill

I remember my dad taking us there. This was the very spot where the expression "what the...?" came from.

the f part came from somewhere else

You can see the squiggly part of Hwy 242 here. It's closed in the winter but weaves it's way through old growth forests and lava fields.

I drove down a winding dirt road that used to be a logging road Friday evening after dropping my older boy at a campout. Saw a couple of herds of deer. Beautiful. Then I drove through the remains of last years forest fire. There is still ash in the river. Sad. :( Less place for the animals to forage, hunt, hide. We'll probably end up with more bears, cats, deer and moose in town now. Then the DOW will have to get involved.
And the sun it may be shining . . . but there's an ocean in my eyes

Grey Back Mountain,is a Logging road that stretches from Happy Camp,Ca.
To Smith River Oregon. We Idiot's as kid's drove that damn thing in the snow,
In a V.W. Bug. Nice white knuckle trip. We do have plenty of winding river roads,
and Mountain roads here in Northern California. And the Coastal roads are awesome. Hwy 1

There is a nice windy road up SanFransico mountain in northern AZ. Single lane, no guard rail up a dirt road. Gets you up to about 10,500 feet. A regular car can make it, but high clearance AWD or 4 is better. Very steep, and you gotta keep a watch out for cars coming in the other direction. You can get two cars by, but your inches away and the guy going up has about 6 inches on his right that goes down a thousand feet. Kinda scary.
    Really pretty up there!

Even in low gear, you're brakes will be nice and warm coming down! :D

I've visited the redwoods up there camping & things with my family when we were kids. i used to pick up crab in crescent city. we'd take a short cut & drive through the redwoods. there's a nice tight road through there with giant trees right up against the road. i remember just barely scraping one & another time being nearly run into a ditch by a dumbie

    beautiful town that crescent city
