The first PJ song I ever heard was ONCE. I would walk around my house at 9 years old singing "Once upon a time, I could love myslef.........Once upon a time, I could loooooooove youuuuu." I remember one time my mom heard me and had a look on her face I'll never forget as she said, "Ashley, honey, did you write that?" She thought I was some sort of prodigy! Hahaha, such great memories!

This is a very cool story ! :-)
Thank you! I have my older sister to thank for buying the TEN cassette more than once due to me stealing it from her. I would listen to that over and over.
Oh also, I have no idea yet how to reply to things like this so I hope I did it right... if not...someone lay it out for me!

Wow, ever? I've been lucky enough to grow up in Philly where the radio stations - past and present (RIP Y100) - have always played a ton of Pearl Jam. So they've been with me my entire life. I couldn't pinpoint it.
I'd say earliest memory might be Jeremy or Small Town or Corduroy. My first real awareness of them as a band was probably around Yield when Wishlist came out. My awareness was even further heightened when Last Kiss came out and WMMR began playing it on loop for the next like 2 years. All of this was when I was under the age of 10 I guess.
I do remember the first time I heard I Am Mine on the radio. The DJ referred to Riot Act as Pearl Jam's comeback. I'd like to ask that DJ with the benefit of hindsight where he thought Pearl Jam went that they had to come back.
It was Alive. I still remember walking through the living room and hearing I'm still alive. I had recently lost a family member and friend so that lyric really hit me.
I could relate - it's kinda funny how Eddie talks about this song relating to surfing and the characters mum being alive, but I think most people just get mesmerised by actually being alive and the repetition of those words. I think this my first sing I heard and have loved ever since. Love seeing it live. Close second is black - oh so powerful. Love seeing that live too. sad though really touches me every time I hear it as does I got id.
Now baby wants to say some words.. Uphill in. Km, CBGB
First song was Once. The Ten CD was played over & over again at work and I absolutely hated it at first. I couldn't relate to the rage that the songs emitted, but after a while I realized that they made me feel better about the crap that was going on in my own life.
I would have never imagined that I’d become a die-hard fan for over 20 years, go figure.

It was 1993 the first time I saw the video of Jeremy. I remember that Eddie's crazy look on his eyes scared the hell out of me. I was only 11. My mom happened to pass by and said: "That guy... looks like the devil". Hahaha.
It was until 1997 that I was hooked when I got to hear Ten, the complete record I mean. I only had a copied tape of it, and would hit the Rewind button to play Once, Even Flow and Alive over and over again. Good days.
If I knew where it was, I would take you there.

My friend played Vitalogy for me when if first came out. I was 11 years old. We listened to the entire record, so my first song was Last Exit. It opened up a new world for me. I didn't really understand the lyrics, but the music just blew me away. I remember when my mom picked me up that evening I made her drive me to the mall so I could buy the CD and I made her listen to it all the way home. She said it was "strange and scary"
I probably bought Ten within a week of hearing Vitalogy, and Vs. not long after. Ever since then I've bought each record on the day of release. I will never forget the first time I could actually drive myself to the record store instead of having my mom do it. Binaural. I didn't get it at first, but now it's one of my favourites.
Each record has it's own special place in my heart. Vitalogy is the one that started it all.
My first song was Once. My Mom bought me Ten on tape for Christmas. The song that got me hooked was Black. The rest is history. Thank you so much Mom I love you...
Jeremy on MTV at my grandparents' place, on their tiny guest room tv. "Wouldn't you please come join us and turn that thing off for once?" "Sorry, can't do that."
We only had three tv channels at home, so watching MTV was pretty much all I did at the grandparents'...

Alive was the first song I heard, bought the cassette based on that song....then I put it in my Sidekick and found Release or it found me. Never had a song knock the wind out of me like that before or since, always my fav PJ song.
Anything you lose from being honest You never really had to begin with.
Sometimes it's not the song that makes you emotional it's the people and things that come to your mind when you hear it.
Alive. Late 1991. I liked it....a lot. Then my buddy came back from a show where PJ opened for Chili Pepper and Pumpkins. He said PJ blew them away and I would love them. Bought Ten and have loved them since.
Friend of mine in college got Ten cd when it first came out. He told me I had to borrow and listen to it cause he knew I liked RHCP, Janes Add, etc. Ran out immediately and bought my own copy. I actually never used the fast forward or reverse buttons listening to it. Played the cd all the time from start to finish. Loved every song. Blew my mind every time... And still does.

I remember Hunger Strike distinctly - WNEW-FM was am awesome radio station. Then i recall Pearl Jam winning for Jeremy; I thought they were so much younger than I; but I know now they are contemporaries. I bought Vs. so Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town, Corduroy & Dissident were the first songs that stuck with me (although I have my own mangled lyrics for the last two).
Everything changed when Better Man was released; I had never felt such a personal and visceral connection to a song. It's so hard to explain the emotions that still come over me when i hear that song. To many it is just another over-played tune; but to me it is a narrative of my reality.. "He opens the door, she rolls over, pretends to sleep as he looks her over"; that causes chills to go down my spine. It's as if EV had found out my secret. No other song has ever touched me so deeply, by any band or artist. And I could do nothing but love the band for making me feel like someone understood.
I think it was Alive, back when I was in high school. They made a hardcore dance track out of the melody line. When I heard there was an original (Alive) I checked that out and loved it
Alive struck me the minute i head it.... that voice, that music... ten as an album touched me in a way only Nevermind did, a little while before... Black was the first PJ song to make me cry... that came from somewhere very deep...
Jeremy in 1994 or '93. I was either 10 or 11, just started playing guitar and writing my first very own songs. I went straight to plagarizing it. I watched it on MTV, it was a new thing in my country by then, cable TV and MTV. I remember getting freaked out with Eddie. Eddie scared me back then. But it was a great tune (specially for a bullied kid) , and only one chord, easy to play.
