About 78,000 people have applied to become Red Planet colonists with the nonprofit organization Mars One since its application process opened on April 22, officials announced Tuesday, May 7. Mars One aims to land four people on the Red Planet in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, with more astronauts arriving every two years thereafter.

I wish we would instead focus on some of the moons of Jupiter or Saturn, where we might find life and be able perhaps colonize. Mars is a Giant Rock, there's little value other then it's close.

I'm with E.O. Wilson. The New frontier is the micro rather than the macro. Space travel is a total waste of money IMHO.

It would be easier to colonize at the bottom of the ocean than Mars

you have to admire the balls of these volenteers,it's a one way ticket...no coming back.
but I also wonder how could they survive without a natural water sourse, mars has ice under it's thin upper crust
but is that enough to sustain life for a long period of time ?

Except the ice is made entirely of Co2. Who knows what diseases are out there, the main killer of new colonies.

I am a really really surprised that some of you don't think this is awesome. Space exploration is an amazing human experiment, and incredibly worthwhile IMO, not only for scientific discovery, but also for growing the human imagination. Not everything is about money (although there are likely great riches to be had in space too, in mining). And of course they're aiming for Mars because its closest. That's where they can get to right now. One step at a time, right? They will learn a lot doing this, and find further advancements.

The fact that this project actually seems to be happening (if the company involved doesn't go bankrupt between now and 2028) completely blows my mind. I think it's super cool. Doesn't a sense of adventure motivate people anymore? If it doesn't, too bad for you.

It is right now because travelling to space is so inefficient

Yeah, the ocean's awesome, but there is no need to live down there. It's close enough that people can commute. The adventure in getting there isn't as challenging either... not compared to colonizing Mars!

Yeah, which is why they need to try projects like this - so they can make advancements and improve efficiency over time.

:will shrug: What are you laughing at? I know it's a challenge getting to the deepest depths, but it's still not comparable to building a community on another planet!

I'm good with living on terra firma which has plenty of good points and it's own challenges. I don't see Mars or living under the ocean as being better or less challenging. Now, if only I could find that greener grass on this planet. Take that any way you want.

I don't think this is an issue of whether or not it would be amazing, but rather an issue of whether or this idea should be sold to people at a point in time when it is not technologically, economically, or biologically feasible.
