According to CNN's bottom line, there will be a $20-25 admission fee to visit the 9/11 memorial. Personally, I would pay the fee to visit it. But should family members of the victims be required to pay to grieve?

The article states family members will not be charged. Is this still appropriate? This was paid for by tax money.

Family members should definitely be exempt from paying to enter but then so should everyone. It should be a memorial, not a tourist attraction. Rather than a single admission fee, I would rather see a pay by donation set up. That way even the homeless and poor would be able to pay their respects.

  • Having a donations set up would be fine that way people can put in as much or as little as they like but $20 - $25 for entry to a memorial is an absolute fucking disgrace :nono:

I could be wrong but if I read this article and others correctly the fee is for the MEMORIAL-MUSEUM
Not for access to the actual memorial
These are 2 different things at Ground Zero

Over the years, the Ground Zero museum has received more than $425 million from the state and federal governments and the Port Authority. It has also raised $450 million in private donations.

I was wondering, I'm not sure at all as I've never been there, but do you have to pay to go through the memorial for the U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor?

I'd guess that if it'd be a "just pay if you can or want" deal, many would, and then some.

Apparently folks can be - have been - quite generous in donating toward this (imagine that!).

no, it's 100% free. I was there 2 years ago. Get there early and get your departure time. You first see an amazing movie on pearl harbor then you take a boat to the u.s.s. arizona. you have about 20 minutes on the memorial then you head back. i belive you have to pay to get on a submarine and another battleship who's name eludes me right now. overall an amazing place. parking is free from what i remember and you can stroll around the park which in itself is a living museum. (guns, torpodoes, meet and greet some pearl harbor vets while you still can!) one of the vets and I were actually from the same hometown.

Thanks! I wasn't sure. I'd love to go someday (soon to meet some that were there).

How sad!!!! What should be a ‘national’ memorial is being whored out like a private ‘cash cow’ .

It’s not just about NY, 9/11 was an attack on America.
America responded as a Nation - a response that American families from every corner of this Nation proudly took to task at home and on foreign soil.
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

Where is this admission money going, exactly?

That memorial costs something like 60 million dollars a year to operate.

Of that around 5 million is just the costs associated with operating those two huge fountains.

Answer: No. There is no admission fee required. There are admission fees to the Aviation museum and other locations on the Historical Landmark, but no fees are taken.

The USS Arizona is considered to be a military cemetary. The U.S. Navy conducts tours to/from the USS Arizona Memorial Cemetary. You are already funding the Navy through your taxes.
Sequestor cuts on discretionary military spending has reduced the number of tours.
