Dirt Road to Psychedelia: Austin Texas During the 1960s
The Band is one of my all time favorite bands EVER, but to me The Last Waltz is just good, I read the Levon Helm book, These Wheels on Fire about 20 years ago and I completely changed my mind about this movie, Robbie Robertson was the only one that wanted to do the concert. He threatened to sue the rest of the band members if they didn't participate, none of them wanted to do the concert or film it and none of them wanted to break up the group either.
In the book Levon says, "why the hell are Neil Diamond and a bunch of people we don't even know playing with us." They lost a bunch of footage of the concert because Martin Scorsese and the film crew were so high on coke, why do you think The Weight and some of the other songs are filmed and performed in the studio and not during the concert. So to answer the question, Is there any doubt that The Last Waltz is the greatest concert of all time? Not by a long shot, if you want to hear a great concert by The Band, buy Rock of Ages, that's a great show. I don't know what was the greatest rock concert of all time, but the 25 Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show was pretty good.
