Jeff Hanneman of Slayer has died at the age of 49.

The band just posted the following to their Facebook page.

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013)

In early 2011, Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis. It is assumed he contacted the disease from a spider bite. Exodus guitarist Gary Holt had been filling in for Hanneman since. There is no word if the liver failure was a complication from necrotizing fasciitis or not.

RIP Jeff. You Were always THE guitar player in Slayer. Your riffs were the best, I grew up on those simple but devestating riffs. I owe my right hand picking speed to you and Hetfield.

Wow, Only 49, Basically Eds age and a year younger than Jeff and Matt... I am getting old. Weird when people in bands you enjoy as a kid start passing makes you ponder your own mortality.

Sad news indeed, Slayer was one of the best live bands i've seen, in fact you didn't go see Slayer, you experienced Slayer.
R.I.P Jeff, sadly missed in the rock scene.
their fans are amongst the best most loyal, and crazy following ever, my heart goes out to them too.

My best slayer story, the year they were late to the download festival, and had to be bumped to the second stage, so we're waiting in the tent for slayer to come on, fans getting excited, chanting, then an announcement comes over, slayer are running late, and will now be on after Taking back sunday, well the fans get restless, start chanting "Slayer, Slayer" after about 10 mins or so, another announcement, okay slayer will be on next but you'll have to be patient and wait until they get ready. I reckon, taking back sunday must've said to hell if we're going out in front of that angry slayer mob.... probably a wise move.

anyway jeff will be sadly miss.

Same man, really broken up about this. Slayer opened so many new doors for me musically when I was younger.

Very sad to hear about this. I outgrew metal (for the most part) while I was still in high school, but the exception to that is Slayer, which still finds itself in my rotation frequently.

Huge loss. Not sure how they can continue without him.

Me too, I remember buying Die By The Sword on tape and then Decade of Aggression, which was one of my favorite albums throughout my high school years.

When I heard it was liver failure I assumed alcohol. Apparently he was bitten by a spider a while back and that may have contributed to it.
Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.

I just read an article on how his last couple of years were. One minute your sitting in a hot tub drinking beer and the next you are in an induced coma! Awful........and then liver failure two years later, all from one damn spider. R.I.P. :(

I felt like I got punched in the gut when I heard about this. I went through the typical "Big Four of Metal" phase from about 8th grade through my sophomore year in high school, but I grew out of it and just never really went out of my way to pay attention to the genre- with the lone exception of Slayer. There's always a spot for Slayer in my car's 5 disc changer; I just had Seasons in the Abyss in the rotation a few weeks ago... This is a big loss for music. Terrible news. RIP

It wasn't a spider bite that led to his death...
