Rhinos extinct in Mozambique

How can this be? How can people kill this beautiful (yes, to me they are beautiful!) animals for some mythological so-called magic potion from their horn? And some of the park rangers have been aiding poachers? Why, why, why?

http://news.yahoo.com/expert-rhinos-ext ... 33659.html

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Mozambique's rhinoceros population was wiped out more than a century ago by big game hunters. Reconstituted several years ago, it has again been driven to extinction, or to the brink of extinction, by poachers seeking their horns for sale in Asia.

A leading rhino expert told The Associated Press that the last rhino in the southern African nation has been killed. The warden in charge of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park — the only place where the horned behemoths lived in Mozambique — also says poachers have wiped out the last of the rhinos. Mozambique's conservation director believes a few may remain.

Elephants also could become extinct in Mozambique soon, the warden of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, Antonio Abacar, told AP. He said game rangers have been aiding poachers, and 30 of the park's 100 rangers will appear in court soon.

i am not a violent person, but if i ran into a poacher and we both had guns, one of us would not leave that place alive. most likely me because i am not the greatest shot, because i don't hunt...

We don't need to hunt poachers, gimme. We'll just gather them up and throw them in a cage at a zoo. I imagine lions are rather fond of tasty, unarmed poachers. :)

I'm not sure this has to do with capitalism, or at least guns, healthcare, etc. Different issue - one of ignorance and buying into bullshit fairy tales of magic rhino horns.

These poachers and anyone who abets them should be shot. No dancing around their bodies, no trophy heads of theirs, just...shot. Done, fini, no more of their harming these animals.

ps to Brian - I think they're beautiful too. Saw a short video clip the other day of a mama rhino teaching her little one to roll in the mud. Fucking adorable.

you'd live. in your dream here you'd forget to mention I was there hiding in the weeds & I helped you somehow. we then walked on to see another day as buzzards circled the dude's corpse & the very last mozambique rhino

the buzzards ate from both carcasses, the bunk ass human animal & from the rhino beast. the buzzard let us know as we were walking away, the buzzards told us in there way that the poacher has a small member

i was certain a hand full of navy seals and a green berate were & may still be protecting some rhinos in some big ass fancy park the british are now ruling over. well fuckers (to the british african land grabbers) you folks are not really helping matters much are you or not?

as said above by another posters, anyone helping out poachers in any fashion should be shot & done with. no parading around his body. nothing. just dead & move forward to the next poacher who is begging to die. and i am as serious as a full blown heart attack. they do not deserve a shallow grave either. buzzards & big cats and things will devour the poachers. i surely would not ever dig a hole to bury a poacher.

By the time my daughter has established herself as a Wildlife Conservationist (she still needs to do her 4 years at university from September, then at least a year 'placement'), at least a dozen species/sub-species will have disappeared in the wild. This includes some tigers, more rhinos, primates, etc. All due to man - poaching (meat, 'medicinal' purposes, trophies), habitat destruction, etc. It is very scary the number of animals that are no longer in a viable population and nothing can be done. Not being defeatist, just reality (and biology!).

Some extinct animals are 'only' extinct in the wild but a few exist in captivity. Others are gone for good.

Education, education, education. And harsh penalties.

    :(

Not only what you say is true, it's also true that many species on the endagered list make a comeback as well. Nature just being nature kills off species, revives some, and new species are being found all the time. What ticks me off is the poaching.

Some manage a 'comeback' but not many. But anything like this is a relief. Hey - they're even looking at cloning extinct species (but not sure how that would work on a grander scale and for 'endurance' of the species - maybe for zoos). As you say, some new species are discovered every day. During my daughter's third year of university, the students have a 2/3 week research trip (various options). Last year, the students who went to Borneo discovered 2 new fish species and were published! Also, sadly, numerous new species are discovered, only to be on the brink of extinction already.

As you say, nature is nature - the cycle of life. Unfortunately, man - through greed - is seriously messing with this cycle, without realising the full impact of their actions.

There would be no poaching problem if it wasn't for the demand and we all know who is to blame for that. This is a battle that will never be won, its just a matter of when not if these animals disappear from the earth forever.

again, get them at one of the sources. when someone wants to buy & then buys rhino horn they make a bust just like a drug deal. they'll be busting dealers & buyers. very harsh sentences will be swift

if these countries just took control of the situations they'd be so much better off in regards to poaching & other aspects of their lives. if a poacher is caught red handed straight up he should be gutted like a fish and or a samurai sword removing their hand(s) & heads.

im so serious it is ridiculous. do this a number of times & i swear to god poaching will halt like 10 mother f bombs.

i remember when i was a child during the 70's you'd see poaching stories on the television-set & i was horrified by what i saw. poachers chop off gorillas' hands & those gorilla hands become ashtrays. fact. these visuals & stories of terror made me despise poachers. for the last 35 years or so i been contemplating on how to assassinate poachers, sick fucks, & people who legally kill critters in those hunt 'em up bunk ass trophy hunting ranches. of course i've never acted on my grisly daydreams but a guy can dream, hope & pray.

I wish it was that easy but these types of transactions goes on through middlemen. They will never be able to take down the people who are actually behind this simply due to the countries that they're from.
