Please Help Scholarship Fund-Thank You!

Fellow Jammers,
In 2005, a lifelong friend who I had known since I was a year old, passed away from bladder cancer. JM, as he was known, was a close personal friend and a mentor to me in many ways. He was wise and intelligent beyond his years, read voraciously and was interested in music, culture, the arts, politics and current events. He was an avid golfer and Yankees, Cardinals and Celtics fan. He also grew up not knowing his father and because of his intellect, had difficulty fitting in socially and participating in traditional education. JM loved Pearl Jam and may have self identified with Jeremy and many other lyrics throughout PJ’s catalog. JM was also the person that I saw my first Pearl Jam concert with in 1998 in Mansfield, MA.
When JM passed away, he left part of his estate to establish a scholarship fund for kids who were like him: intelligent, driven to succeed and perhaps having to overcome barriers to somehow make it. As he didn’t have any family that he was close to, he left his estate to a group of his closest friends. I was one of three friends charged to establish and oversee the awards from the scholarship he created at his high school alma mater, even though he attended the “alternative” high school at the time, Kodachrome. Below is an excerpt from a recent fundraising letter I sent out to solicit donations to his scholarship:
Prior to passing away in 2005, John requested that a scholarship fund in his name be established, with funds he bequeathed, to benefit South Kingstown High School students that were like him; capable, driven to succeed, intelligent but maybe needing just a little push or someone to believe in them in order to reach their full potential. To quote portions of the eulogy delivered by John’s uncle, Brian, at his memorial service,
“But after that rocky and troubled start, as you all know, he found a way to succeed, to use his energy and drive and intelligence – and personality – to become someone so special to so many of you.”
Brian’s eulogy went on to say,
“John Michael’s estate is establishing a scholarship fund to help make a college education possible for kids like him – “troubled” students at South Kingstown, kids who have the ability but aren’t at the top of their class. Kids like John. We know what he means. These two decisions, these legacies, say what any of us would have difficulty putting into words: John Michael Crowley was a man of caring and compassion – and strong conviction – who at the end of the day, wanted to help other people.”
Please consider making a donation to JM’s scholarship fund, The John Michael Crowley Memorial Scholarship Fund administered by the Rhode Island Foundation and help the next “Jeremy” from South Kingstown High School. Additional information on how you can donate is below and if you’d like to read the eulogy his uncle gave at his service to better understand what kind of a person JM was, PM me and I’ll forward it to you. He truly was a remarkable individual and really wanted to help others, despite his meager and difficult beginnings.
Please consider making a tax deductible contribution in John’s memory in any amount by mailing a check made payable to the Rhode Island Foundation, with a notation to benefit the John Michael Crowley Scholarship Fund, to: The Rhode Island Foundation, 1 Union Station, Providence, RI 02903. You may also make an online contribution by going to their website at:
