NFL UPDATE:

The American Indian Council has requested that the NFL disassociate itself with American Indian names. The Washington Redskins will therefore change their name to the Washington Foreskins in honor of all the pricks in Washington, DC, effective immediately.

Even as a fairly unPC person and Redskins fan to boot, I can see how the name would be offensive.

Otherwise I did enjoy your joke, GF. :D

With the Redskins, it kind of flies under the radar because I associate the term Redskins with football all my life and have never heard it used in a derogatory manner ... but yeah, when you think about it, it's widely offensive. That this team exists in Washington D.C. of all places makes it even crazier. But their uniforms are sweet.

As for Chief Wahoo … well, a picture says a thousand words …

So, D.C. has an NFL team called the Redskins led by a black quarterback, and an NHL team called the Capitals lead by a Russian, and their slogan is "rock the red."

That's exactly it, at least insofar as why it doesn't offend me in the least. My whole life, the word "redskins" has meant nothing -- nothing at all even a little bit -- other than a football team. My whole family are skins fans, so not only does "redskins" connote football, it basically IS football. I don't associate the word "redskins" with Native Americans any more than I associate the word "bananas" (which are yellow) with Asian Americans.

That said, like you jason, I am intellectually capable of seeing why it would be offensive. Given that, I'm cool with them changing the name, but they better come up with a good one. Too bad the Senators is taken. I always liked that one.

Have they tossed "Washington Indigenous Peoples of the Americas" around?

It could stick, given some time.

Ha, I appreciate that, thanks. I have ties to both Pittsburgh and DC/VA, so I'm a friend to fans on both sides (easier with football, being they are in different conferences).

Good thing you're from Western PA and not Eastern. Would be a whole different story with the reconcilability of your allegiances.
