Timothy McVeigh used 480 pounds of fertilizer to blow up the federal building in OKC. This was an entire fertilizer plant!
    I thought the same thing.

Based on the press conference earlier, this seems like a very strong and supportive community. Gotta add these folks to the ever-growing list of those needing good thoughts and good actions.

sad story. fertilizer is a massive explosive. scary that we even use this shit. just like those plants like Ortho that make weed & bug killers. those products are actually killing ppl by way of cancer & whatnot.

currently a Egyptian owned company is erecting a massive fertilizer plant something like 8 -10 miles from me. they were given millions of dollars in tax breaks to erect their bullshit fertilizer plant here. from what I've heard it will resemble a small city when the lights are lit as the sun has set.

something like 1 tanker truck will roll out of this plant fully loaded with fertilizers every few seconds 24x7

That video is so frightening, what in the world was that man and his daughter doing there, so close?? He should have known the chance for an explosion!
Not everyone is smart. Obviously, he didn't know the danger or he wouldn't have been there.

Reports of looting?? That's surprising in such a small town.

I don't know... they didn't suggest that, but maybe. Hopefully.

This is about an hour south of where I live. Small town, very pleasant, about 2800 people. Settled by Czech immigrants, they have awesome Czech bakeries. I've stopped there many times on the way to and from Austin. They also have a fun little festival every year called Westfest.

Fertilizer can be so dangerous and it's incredible to think of the devastation for such a small community. Heartbreaking to me to think of the first responders who lost their lives.

For those who saw the video taken by the man with his daughter, on the news this morning they said that the daughter regained her hearing after a short time.

Very sad. RIP to all those folks.

Fertilizer is such an important business in America (and the world). Plants here in the states go through enormous amounts of regulations/safety training/disaster planning but your core ingredients like ammonium nitrate or hyrdrogen are never going to be 100% disaster proof. Towns like West depend on these companies so hopefully the town recovers as well.

It might be a good lesson... I don't know what city planner decided that it was a good idea to put schools and old folks homes and houses immediately next to a place that stores tons upon tons of highly combustible materials, but it seems like a bad idea.

Right on the railroad tracks at the edge of town so they could receive deliveries.

I just read in a news story that the plant didn't have some of the safety measures required by law, including a sprinkler system for fires.

  • Has anyone seen the ridiculous conspiracy theories about this on youtube?

Some are saying a missile hit it, saying it was a "diversion" by the New World Order.:lol::lol:

I haven't seen anything about that but nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to conspiracy theories. I guess they're overlooking the fact that if it were a deliberate act to make some kind of statement, why do it in a farming community of less than 3,000 people?

Anyway, the people of West are going through enough right now without wackos turning the situation into some kind of portent of the apocalypse, or whatever they're saying it is.
